This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Isabel in a steep northward climb

#1 Postby Renata » Sun Sep 07, 2003 6:34 am

The 1102Z Meteosat picutre http://152.80.49.216/archdat/tc03/ATL/1 ... EL.13L.jpg shows the center of Isabel to be near 14.2N 37W which is a mighty steep climb from the 0900Z position of 13.7N 37.1W.

It just might be that the eye continues to jump around and reform. Remember late last night it was stationary for about four hours and then it continued due west. Now this morning, it jumps to the NW.

This has to be a pretty strong *hurricane* out there. Hurricanes behave in this manner as opposed to storms (subject to correction). I don't recall a storm reforming its eye but I do know hurricanes do.

Sort of remind me of Hugo. All the satellite estimates showed a tropical storm but when the NOAA P2 reached it, it was a full fledged monster.

The days are yet early .... the painful thing is that it would be anywhere near land for another working week and that kinda draws out the suspense. NOT that I want it to make landfall!

I don't think that's the center you are looking at - looks like 13.6 where the last advisory had it is where the center is.....and still headed west.

Here come Juan - invest is out on this one now ....

If you look at the entire envelope, it has shifted NW, has it not?

What you're seeing is not a true NW motion, but a cyclone in its formative stages. Convection is firing in the northern quad of the storm, and its tucking that in towards its center. It seems to be accelerating now and has grown considerably in size. Follow the center of circulation and you'll see over the course of the day that its motion will resume a motion a hair north of due west (275). Isabel is indeed the biggest looking storm so far, as her banding goes way down into the ITCZ. SHe's a looker'

I agree Steve! Isabel is a big lady already and getting bigger. It's hard to pinpoint a track until she settles down a bit. Some jumping around is normal while she gets herself together. :-)

Exactly - so basically you follow what the NHC says until she becomes better organized.
