What are your credentials? Are you a professional meteorologists, work at the NHC, a student, amateur meteorologist, or ... ? Just curious.

Just an every day person with a hurricane fascination, a fast computer with an excellent graphics card, and a willingness to learn about the factors of hurricane direction.

*grins* I know there are a couple of pro-mets on here... and some people who have lots more experience. :)

Certainly a rank amateur weather addict. But for many years (till just recently) I was the weather researcher/writer/reporter for a daily newspaper where I live in Fla. Still write weather for the magazine I edit. Had the privilege of meeting and talking with Dr. Sheets (my favorite all-around Met) a few years back and a number of other Mets in Florida as part of my journalistic duties.

Just a "normal" weather fanatic.

I am just really interested in Hurricanes. I found this board a couple of months ago and I have learned a lot already this season. Lots of knowledgable members here both pro and amature.

A lot of people on here, who I am unaware of their credentials, are just as informed as some of our wonderful forecasters and mets. Reading as many posts as you can will help you learn so much! :D

Fair Question...My Background

#11 Postby MWatkins » Wed Sep 10, 2003 12:09 pm

It's always been my opinion that you don't have to be qualified for anything to post on a message board and give your opinion. But I get that question a lot (or used to) so I'll let you know what my background is.

1. Attended (did not graduate) the University of Oklahoma with a major in Meteorology. I'm about 35-40 hours from getting my degree...but I've been that far out for 5 years now.
2. Been studying tropical weather since 1994...
3. 5 years of hurricane forecasting, this is the 4th year of verified track forecasts.

You can find verification stats and archived forecasts etc here:

http://www.tropicalupdate.com

As a minor side note, I used to have a "Storm2K forecaster" avatar but that's been changed...I guess I'm a former Storm2k forecaster now. Not sure what happened there but I'm not too worried about it.

BTW the 12Z GFS has Isabel missing SFL barely to the SOUTH and heading toward the Yucatan.

MWatkins, we shifted the S2K Forecaster designation to identify the formal site forecast team. That group spends a lot of time doing the forecasts for our site and we thought they deserved the recognition. It was not meant as an insult to any of our regular and very well respected amateur forecasters :-) I hope you understand.

We also created a Professional Met designation for those that agreed to be identified to the board.

I am one of the storm2k forecasters but not a pro met but an amateour one that has been looking at weather in the tropics for more than 20 years now so I guess to have experience to deal with hurricanes and forecasting them.

I'm really interested in hurricanes and I like to see what is forecast and make my own predictions and opinions. Part of it is what is forecast and part of it is what I feel might or will happen later on down the road.

Not a problem. Like I stated before...I'm not too worried about it.

Keep up the good work.

I am a weather fanatic who has been following winter storms and the tropics for many years. And reading the posts here and at several other message boards has done nothing but fuel my interest, as well as teach me a lot of things about storms (and the weather in general).

I am one of the Storm2k forecasters...although I have been on a bit of a hiatus due to personal reasons. I will graduate on December 13 of this year from the University of South Alabama with my bachelor's degree in meteorology. I have completed my meteorology courses and am tying up the loose ends on the other classes that are required.

A Nole Met.....

#20 Postby WeatherNole » Wed Sep 10, 2003 2:34 pm

I graduated from Florida State with a BS in Meteorology in 1988. I've been in the broadcast met biz since then - currently the Chief Met at the CBS affiliate in Tallahassee (so yes - I am watching Isabel quite closely).

I just recently found this board and have only posted a few times. I enjoy reading and sifting through the thoughts of all the posters here. IMO, the key to making a good forecast is obtain as much "data" as possible, then "weed out" the info and apply sound meteorological reasoning. I don't claim to be an expert on tropical meteorology, but I have lived and worked in Florida all my life, and have experienced many tropical storms and hurricanes. (The funny part is - the only time I've actually been hit directly by a hurricane was at Cape Cod! I was on vacation back in '91 when Bob came roaring through.)

I may not get to lurk or post too much if Isabel does take aim on Florida - esp. N. Fla, but I do enjoy visiting when I can.

Keep up the good work!

Mike
