Question for all those who have been in a hurricane before

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Question for all those who have been in a hurricane before

At what wind speed should you board up your windows? If you're expecting 80 mph? 100 mph?

This should be done before the wind speed! I would say when you get the hurricane warning start boarding up ....wind speeds will vary!

Board if they are predicting above 40-60 sustained winds, because it could get a lot worse very quickly and there are many pockets in storms that have higher sustained winds, alongside high gusts!

we board up our windows as soon as we get a hurricane warning..not a watch but a warning.
actually some of my hurricane shutters are on now.we got tired of wondering whether or not these storms were coming :)
I'm leaving them up until the very end of this hurricane season
actually the ones on my bedroom windows block out the morning sun and I have been able to sleep later than usual. I like that
it's not so much that a low wind speed will blow your windows out but it is to protect from flying debris coming crashing into your premises and that can happen at any speed.

A soon as a hurricane warning is issued for your area you should start putting up shutters. It only takes one broken window to let the storm into your home and believe me you don't want that.

Yes as soon a hurricane watch is issued not a warning because then it will be rush time but a watch 48 hours before the event.I had been thru 4 landfalls and I know what it is this all about.

Brick Homes & Boarding Windows

#8 Postby galvbay » Mon Sep 15, 2003 10:00 am

If you have a brick house...you might try these new items. I have them but (luckily) have not had to use them. They are much easier to install than screwing/nailing boards up and they do not damage the brick.
