Good for them! Someone is thinking ahead to save lives. Those barrier islands are death traps in a hurricane. With the way the models are looking those officials will be praised for their wise actions.

They will meet tonight to discuss evacuation route, reversing traffic from the beach to one way - West. . .

Usually, Ocracoke is the first to evacuate, so I'm not surprised, since they wouldn't want to wait until tomorrow morning, when the northern beaches would possibly evacuate. I don't know if they will send traffic one way; they probably wouldn't do that until the last minute (i.e. 24 to 36 hours before hit), at least it's probably not necessary for the next 36 hours.

Also do you think that evacuation in the northern beaches would be voluntary or mandatory? My guess would be a voluntary tomorrow, then possibly a mandatory Wednesday, if the hurricane continues to threaten. Then they might turn traffic one way...

My gosh... reality is finally setting in. Please heed all watches and warnings. Evacuate if you are told to do so.

Ocracoke island evacuted because

#9 Postby NC George » Mon Sep 15, 2003 2:20 pm

It's only access is by ferry boat, and they have to stop running well in advance of the 'canes closest pass. You can expect Hatteras Island (it had a road, but only a 2 lane that frequently gets cut in half during a 'cane) to be evacuated tomorrow morning.
