I don't think that it would be that all of them are stupid. Some, yes, but not all of them. Many are being told the hurricane is weakening and they have nothing to worry about. That is what my Aunt said this morning. The news are the NC coast is telling everyone that they can expect winds of 50mph and that's it. Nothing to worry about...so guess what..my aunt and uncle are staying unless they are told it is a mand. evac. I tried to tell her, but she kept repeating what the news is telling them.

Where does your aunt live? I wouldnt want to have the liability of the newscaster that conveyed false information (if indeed it turns out that the storm is much stronger than 50 mph winds.) besides being extremely dangerous to those folks who rely on what they think is accurate information, this could be a costly mistake.

I can understand people wanting to protect thier investments, but guess I'm just a chicken. I run when they say cat 1.

I think alot of this with people staying has to do with the way it is being handled by the TV and raidio broadcasts and compounded by the fact that she was a cat 4 or 5 for such a long period that it makes a cat 2 seem like a cake walk. If it had started with a cat 1 and grew into an almost cat 3 they would be running for the hills.

Looks like they've recommended voluntary evacuation for Surf City. Not sure where that is relative to Topsail.

You don't need a category 3 Hurricane to cause huge damage.

Georges & Floyd both struck the US Mainland as a strong 2 and did over $2 Billion each.

Several folks have posted the link to Avalon Pier in the last couple of days. It looks like it's starting to churn a bit out there........

Flooding

The individuals who decides to stay on the beaches should not only be considering the wind, but more importantly the storm surge. It is said that the storm surge is the most dangerous part of the hurricane effects. I hope your aunt and uncle remain safe should they decide to stay.

Alicia, Surf City is just next to Topsail Island, so I'm sure Topsail will get evac orders soon as well.

It's not smart to stay and the beach in any cane. I bet you after this one if they survive that they will never stay at the beach again .

I feel the need to point this out.......Topsail Island floods in moderate weather. It is a tiny sliver of land that is right next to Surf City. I lived there some years ago. It is very Isolated, and known for its SURF and RIPTIDES. I know this beach very well and I am saying this without any hype involved. In just a decent non tropical atlantic storm I have watched the surf come right up under my house. I saw the old pier collaps as well. It is very important for those people to take proper action and get out. All they have to do is go over the bridge to Snieds Ferry. It is very close and although could also flood, would be much safer. Once the storm hits that Isalnd, anyone there could be quickly stranded. Many houses on that island have dissappeared into the sea in previuose storms.

Images hosted somewhere else wouldn't affect your bandwidth. They count against the bandwidth of whatever server they are hosted on.

It's only images hosted on the Storm2K server (for example, avatars-- and smilies, though they are small) that count here.

Think they are just asking for people to post links instead of the actual picture ... :)

What didn't help was my Aunt stated that some Storm Chasers came yesterday to the pier she works at and told her it was just going to be messy but nothing like a "typical hurricane". What the heck is a "typical hurricane"? A cane is a cane is a cane I told her! I phoned just a bit ago and my uncle said my aunt went onto work. Geesshhhh! They have never stayed during a storm..why now? Well, he said if it gets too bad, they will head my way. I was like, "Crap, it took you guys 6 hours on the interstate to get here before Floyd..you will be stuck on the interstate now DURING the cane". The drive is about 2 hours for them, slow pokes. I give up! :x I hate to say it, but I can't keep talking til I'm blue in the face. They just aren't listening. I just hope they will be okay.
