the media uproar

#1 Postby ncweatherwizard » Wed Sep 17, 2003 10:17 pm

A couple of distinguished quotes:

When referring to one family staying for the hurricane in VA, "We'll only hope that they can recover".

I believe in VA Beach, emergency officials are asking people to "write their names in permanent marker on their arms so that they can be identified if they do not survive."

What is this, Andrew or something? I understand the concern, but isn't this being a little overplayed? I'm just afraid that if nothing or next to nothing happens with this storm, that when the strong one really hits, that no one will heed the advice of anyone--you know: "crying wolf".

BTW, ChaserUK was on local TV tonight in VA Beach.

Its a useful tactic when you want to get the holdouts to evacuate from barrier islands. Around here they don't go that far, they just go around and as for the next of kin.

Typical.

Being a former broadcast journalist, let me be the first one to tell everyone that newscasters and reporters usually don't know when to shut the hell up. Always have to get the last word in, no matter how inane or banal.

I remember watching KOMO 4 news during the Seattle earthquake last year and the camera showed a tree which had fallen across a fence in a residential neighbourhood. The stupid newscaster says, "Imagine if somebody had been standing there. That would have been a tragic thing."

Shut up. Just once, shut up and let the pictures tell the story will ya?

Thanks. That's one thing I somehow never fell for when I was reporting. 2 things I hate, no loathe, about TV reporting.

1. Cop talk. Using police jargon when there's a perectly good normal sounding word available. Ie: apprehended instead of arrested or simply "caught".

2. The need for every TV reporter to sign off with a pithy summarizing statement about the situation at hand. I used to drive my boss nuts with my simple, "Well, there you have it." I'm not the one telling the story, the people I'm interviewing are.

I live in seattle during the earthquake and i though KOMO 4 especially always did that. I think its a horrable news station, especially everytime something went wrong outside washington state there had to be a "SEATTLE CONNECTION" just plain stupid to me
