WB noon news: dad on beach with child pointing at Isabel

#1 Postby Miss Mary » Thu Sep 18, 2003 12:01 pm

I'm watching a live report on the WB network, noon news (EST), from Wrightsville Beach, NC a short time ago. Several swimmers, people walking about on the beach. Clearly just residents or tourists, not OCM's. Just when you're thinking oh they're just kids and/or storm chasers, you see an older dad holding a child of about 2 or 3. Right up to water's edge almost and he's showing her the waves. Pointing out into the water. News anchors said he should be arrested.....tend to agree with that. Thought that was a bit extreme.

The stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me.

CNN just had a clip from NC with a guy at a beachside park swinging on a swing in his yellow slicker watching the waves crash. Pretty brave!

News anchors should report the news unlike CNN and Fox. JMHO. The man is an American and has every right to be on a beach not closed to a curfew to show his daughter or granddaughter the effects.

I agree if the child is at risk, but is a 2 year old ever out of risk at the beach?

Actully I tend to agree with steve- so long as the winds aren't making it a hazard that she'd jsut fly away in them- why not show a child the fury of mother nature... assuming that you move back towards home and shelter once it gets bad ;)

Surely you aren't suggesting that CNN and Fox would add anything besides fact to the news?

Steve- I am a father of 2 very young children. I have enough working brain cells to know that having kids out in 80 to 90 mph winds is NOT safe. Whether it's at the beach, or out in the street. But ESPECIALLY at the shore with the size of those waves coming in.

I'm going to assume you don't have kids.

Sticking up for Journalists...

#11 Postby Josephine96 » Thu Sep 18, 2003 12:49 pm

I myself am a Journalism major at the local college and probably will end up working for a big network in a few years... I am a very good reporter..

Now while it may not be right to show a mom or dad with his kid on a beach in the middle of a cane.. It is a picture that is worth 1,000 words.. usually not the reporters' comments..

Reporters are just as at risk as the kids and parents because they are sent out into the tough elements..

Just my journalistic opinion

Steve - yes this is Storm2K but a lot us are parents too. I still stand by my initial shock - yes I was shocked a parent would take a young child out in that wx! I think news anchors are justified in stating their opinions, when faced with footage like that. They're only human, like the rest of us. Well, most of us anyway....

Sorry everybody. I didn't mean to go all off on a tangent here. My point was that if a reporter or an observer wants to go out there, well, fine. They know the risks, and they accept it. But to take out a small child in that is endangerment, plain and simple.

weatherluvr - 100% agree with you. My only concern was this man chose to take a young child out to see Isabel, first hand. A kid that probably thought it would be a fun day at the beach! Like normal.....if any adults want to venture out, go right ahead. I took your post the way you intended.

North Georgia:

Before rolling your eyes at the quoted part of the post, perhaps you'd like to re-examine the fact that it says "UNLIKE CNN AND FOX". That "un" makes all the difference in the world.

opera ghost,

Thanks for the back. I didn't see the report first hand, so it's tough to say what the conditions really were. Obviously a parent should use proper judgment.

weatherluvr,

Wrong. I have 3 kids (12, 10, 7). I wouldn't endanger them, but I let them come outside with me for Bill (2003), Isidore, Lili (2002) and Georges (1998) with gusts ranging from 35-50mph. I'm sure someone would take me to task over that, but we were just having fun. If you coddle and baby your kids they'll grow up to be spoiled wimps. I know. I'm a parent of tough kids who are learning to understand the world around them. We let them get dirty and have fun unique to kids. On the other hand, one of my brothers has a 15 month old who wimpers constantly to be held. He and his wife are overprotective and are creating a monster who will have difficulty resolving his own conflicts.

Been there. So I'll ask again -

Steve - so are you asking me to leave this board b/c I'm a concerned mother? Geez.....I have every single right in the world to start a topic like this and I'm proud I did just that!!!!

And on that note I will leave this board, the Tropics. You may have the floor Steve!!!! See ya....

No problem Mary. You saw it first hand. No way a baby can handle 80-90MPH winds (just look at the MSNBC clip noted earlier). But if it's just a rough day at the beach, then maybe it's not so bad.

Wait a minute! I didn't even see your reply before I posted. Check the times. I actually handed the floor over to you before I saw your second reply. Again, you saw it first hand so I defer to you. But it's bizarre how people get all up in a tiffy. This is usually a friendly forum (more or less anyway).

I think we're all a littl on edge, Steve is defensive of his post- as are others.. and it's sjut a mess.

EVERYONE agrees that Kids should be kept out of dangerous situations :) NOT everyone know how dangerous the conditions were!

Lets all agree to agree ;)

And no, I'm not asking you to leave the board. I appreciate what you and everyone else says. Apparently I came off a little rough-on-the-edges too.
