Dumb Question.......

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Dumb Question.......

#1 Postby WVNancy » Thu Sep 18, 2003 12:39 pm

Hi everyone, thanks for all your info, I hope everyone is safe wherever they are! I am in WV, obviously...and I have a pretty dumb question, but I know nothing about hurricanes so please bear with me. Our local NWS statements are still calling for at least 40mph winds with higher gusts. My question is...I know that there is an eye in a hurricane and that when the eye passes over, everything gets calm for a while. Well, by the time that Isabel reaches us in Martinsburg, granted, its not going to be a Cat 2 hurricane anymore...but is it still going to be a Cat 1?? Also...the main question is...is there still going to be an eye to it when it gets here? Is that period of calm possible here in Martinsburg? TIA for your answers!

Hey not a stupid question Nacy. To answer it by the time it gets to WV it won't be a Cat 1 storm and though the storm will still have its center it won't have its eye feature anymore.

The winds you will see will depend a lot on you elevation there. If you are low lying, I imagine some gusts to tropical storm force will be possible. If you are on a hill...you may see some gusts in the 50-60 mph range in heavier rain squalls.
