ChaserUK back in UK

#1 Postby ChaserUK » Mon Sep 22, 2003 9:43 pm

Hi guys!

Well what can I say - pulled it off - I have actually experienced a hurricane. Have to say, I have a lot more respect for these storms than I did have before I went. I was picked up a couple of times and thrown into walls - have the sprained wrists and cuts and bruises to show for it! Isabel really did kick my butt. When I was talking about catching her as a Cat 5 - I did not know what I was saying anf will think twice if one threatens. I could have made it to Marty but after spending 3 days in a hotel with no power, nothing to dry clothes and baking hot, I needed to get back. The freelance reporter that experienced Isabel with us has invited us to experience a Nor-Easter so I may be back in a month or so! Researching them as we speak.

The entire experience was out of this world and I now know the different sides of a hurricane. The build up, the storm itself and then the effect afterwards on peoples personalities, daily life. Walking down VA Beach during a curfew, no power, complete darkness, weired and scarey.

I would also like to pass on my sympathies to those who lost family members etc. It is a real shame that people lost their lives. Thing is, time is a good healer, I know that myself. Things can only get better!

Anyway, I myself loved the experience and thank you guys for your kind words and VERY useful advice - I needed it.

Let's just keep watching those skies huh?

Regards

Welcome back, ChaserUK. I am also glad you are back to the United Kingdom safe.

There's the proof that these systems, even moderate to strong tropical storms to catagory one hurricanes can cause numerous problems.

Good idea, there. Remember, wind force varies exponentially with velocity. A Cat 5's winds would be 4 times (or more) as powerful as what you experienced. And, chances are, a Cat 5 would have a better organized wind field, producing the strongest wind for a longer period of time. You would not be able to go outside in a Cat 5, as you would literally be blown away and probably killed.

Glad you made it home OK.

Thanx Guys - yes it was a blast to say the least. What made it even more enjoyable was knowing that so many people here and in the UK were watching what we were up to! That's why I had to quickly dispel the rumour that we had been arrested! Thinking about it, I could have made Marty but we were all so focused on Isabel we did not think to look. Anyway, hope all power restored real soon and things can get back to normal for those who were affected.

Glad you made it back home! It sounds like you not only learned alot about the storm itself, but also the pains of those who live in areas where hurricanes threaten. I hope you won't forget the experience. And congrats on a successful chase.

I am so glad to hear you made it home in one piece Chaser! It is a good lesson to learn to respect Mother Nature. She keep us in balance but can be very deadly. Where are the pics? Especially the one of you flying!! :) :)

I am glad you got to experience a cane but I am more happy to hear you are ok!!

pics are on their way. The freelance chap took some excellent action shots indeed - to be honest it looks like I was sky diving when I was trying to stay upright!

OMG!! Looks like a possible tornado hit the area where I was only a few days ago! Those poor residents!

"RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A possible tornado struck the Richmond area Tuesday and torrential rain flooded parts of the Baltimore area, adding to the power outages and other problems the region already faced from Hurricane Isabel."

welcome back home. I am glad you had your "experience" and I am glad you understand all the complexities of a hurricane. it is exciting, yes, but bottom line is it really isn't that much fun. It'a a lot of hardship and heartache. you spent 3 days in a hotel with no power
how would you feel about 3 months with no power?
I really question sometimes people's need to expereince a hurricane. often they don't know what they are talking about and often they are not sensitive to the plight of the people who lose everything
you do not seem to be that way so I will tell you one more thing you have to experience in a hurricane
for next time!
you must experience the eye of a hurricane
it's the weirdest and the most awesome experience
you are barricaded in your house and the wind is howling for what seems like days. your eardrums hurt..all of a sudden..nothing..you think you've gone deaf.. you peek outside.. sunshine..blue skies... weird phenomena.
then all of a sudden the wind and rain start again.....coming from the opposite direction!!!!!!
you hunker down again and pray it is all over with quickly!

Hi Msbee and thanks. I agree, the eye is the next aspect of a hurricane I want to experience. I heard that some chasers did get to experience it this time but it was cloudy. Apparently the winds dropped form near 100mpg to nothing in less than a minute. That must be just so spooky and very weird indeed!

Cheers guys - will have plenty more to come! Looking back, I can't believe I managed it though, all that uncertainty and so many 'what if's' Kudos to you lot however, you provided very helpful advice and forecasts and opinions on what Isabel was planning to do. All great stuff!
