Frances no more after 2004

#1 Postby *StOrmsPr* » Tue May 04, 2004 6:57 pm

i found this on google search

http://www.google.com.pr/search?q=cache ... 2004&hl=es

extract:

5.20 The Committee recalled that, at its session in 2002, the delegate from France requested consideration of a change of the name (Frances), which is on the list for 2004, to be made at this session. The Committee agreed to change the name after the 2004 hurricane season. The Committee also decided to retire the names of the three hurricanes that caused significant damage and loss of life during 2002. These were Isidore and Lili in the North Atlantic basin, and Kenna in the Eastern North Pacific basin. Regarding a change of the name (Lili), it will be made at the twenty-sixth session of the Committee in April 2004. The other two, i.e. Isidore and Kenna were replaced by the names Ike and Karina respectively, which will be reflected in the WMO RA IV Hurricane Operational Plan.

You know, it just occured to me now, after reading this thread, and wondering why they replaced Isidore with Ike... I always thought Isidore was a girl's name! (No offense intended to any males named Isidore out there... ) Then I realized the names around it were Hanna and Josephine. Hmmm...

Why is Frances being considered for retirement.

Is it due to the $500 Million damage bill in 1998.

don't think so is not a retirement at all ( i mean is not because damage or loss of life) is a change asked by a delegate from France , maybe is because

France + s = Frances LOL

Confusion maybe?? France, Frances??

But the it could be de $500 Million damage bill as you said

France joke coming...please forgive me...I really have nothing against the French islands but his is too hard to pass up.

They should keep the name. If there is any correlation between the name and the country France, Tropical Storm Frances will likely surrender to the first airforce recon plane into the system.

This is not right. Frances should only be removed if she gets retired as a destructive storm.

2004 might be your last chance Frances!

Hurricane Ismael was initially replaced by "Israel". An uproar followed in the Jewish community. So Ismael was replaced by "Ivo" instead.

The article I read this in pondered if the name "Omar" will be the next to go?

I think France should not bother with this...I can't believe they don't like Frances being used...it's a common name in the US.

Also the Israel thing...I think they should have ignored it too...it's not hurting anything and Israel is a common name in the Hispanic community.

Good point Scott. Delegates should only be from the countries on the western atlantic ocean and pacific ocean. Unless a tropical storm somehow made it over there, France should have no say, no offense to the French. It just doesn't make sense.

Why is France always a pain in the ***? :grrr:

They are so annoying.

I don't understand why a name should be retired if it doesn't cause lots of deaths or damage.

The reason they have a delegate is because of the French Islands in the Caribbean that get hit by tropical systems. I know there's several in the Leeward Islands.

From a "frenchie"

#16 Postby HUC » Thu Jun 03, 2004 6:21 pm

Iam from Guadeloupe,a french territory................
I'am considering myself firsteval as a Carribean man!
I AGREE WITH THE FACT THAT Frances should not be retired, because i really see no relationship between the name of a storm and a country.
But,why some guys are talking with so animousity or "lol" about this country?During a time we are celebrating the D DAY,of June 6 1944 when a lot of young américan boys gived their life for liberty in France and Europe!I got a great respect for the US.
What i think is that we should have never to talk of "politic",or religion on this board;this the better way to offence someone!!!
So, what do you think of the wave nearing the Antilies?

France has delagates because France is affected quite often. Guadeloupe and Martinique are not overseas colonies, but a part of France itself, kind of how PR is here for the USA

My original comment was facetious. I might argue the point however given French Polynesia is the only French "Territory" listed as a member of the WMO. But anyway, obviously, virtually every country is in the WMO including:
Burkina Faso, Iraq, Vanuatu, Pakistan, Luxembourg and Cook Islands, among others.

I won't go OT but have huge problems with the WMO. While concerns are somewhat belayed that Max Mayfield has served as Hurricane Chair, the WMO still gives me the creeps.
