New Data For Models

#1 Postby adelphi_sky » Sun Aug 15, 2004 9:47 am

How soon does new data get used for the model runs. For instance, has Charley's data already been input? Seeing as how Earl is taking the same path. And do the models use an aggregate of the data, or only the most recent? For instance, the last 20 years worth instead of the last hundred years?

Good morning...

The only models that would use the historical data are the SHIPS...CLIPPER and the NHC98. I believe these models work with a database through last year...I do not believe this season is loaded in. Even if it were...it would have only a small if any effect on the output.

All of the other models use equations based on physics (the NOGAPS/UKMET/GFS/SURO and others)...not history...and are hence called dynamical models. They do not have any historical information attached to them....and they consistently outperform the statistical models.

Hope this helps.
