Eyewall not reforming?

#1 Postby skysummit » Fri Sep 03, 2004 5:37 pm

I'm getting 4 - 5 minute updates off the Miami radar and just when it looks like storms are beginning to wrap around the center, they seem to dissapate. Now, grant it, the center is still about 180 miles away from the radar so it may not be so accurate. The center also seems to be right over or at least half over an island. If it would to move off of the island, could an eyewall possibly form given less shear?

Remember that at a distance of 180 miles you are not getting a good picture of whats going on at the surface. Thats the nature of radar. Most likely at those distances you are actually seeing things at a much greater distance above the surface. This is why its best to use the whole range of tools at your disposal rather than just one item.

yea, you're right....the radar beam at the center is around 31,800 feet. Definately not what's going on at the surface!

Wait though....if I'm looking at the Base Reflectivity, and I'm picking up around -50 dbz reflectivity around the center of circulation with the beam being almost 32,000 feet high, then it sure must be rough around the center.
I changed to composite reflectivity and can pick up the center much easier.
