Waterflow in the eye?

#1 Postby skysummit » Fri Sep 03, 2004 8:02 pm

Say you're sitting in a boat out in the ocean and you're right in the center of the eye. What direction would the waves be flowing around you? Would they be going in an counterclockwise motion following the direction of the wind, or would they be pushing outward in all directions away from the cool air and lowest pressures in the middle?

I was just thinking about this, so if anyone knows....please explain.

Thanks!

That's what I would think also, but since there is little to no wind in the eye, what would it look like? Would the water be calm, or just extremely choppy with no direction?

I believe the ocean conditions in the eye of a hurricane are extremely chaotic. Waves are most likely bumping into one another...making for very large waves.

and I swear I'm not making this up....a confused sea. Waves propagate in many directions, and as a previous poster noted, they crash into each other, each contirbuting their enery toa new, larger wave, which rushes off in a new direction, possibly joining with other waves.

In a condused sea, one can sometimes see waves coming from opposite directions which then crash into each other. Quite a sight. the wave briefly halts its forward mothhion, and shoots straight up, then settles back down, and races off in anew direction. I have heard the eye water conditions descibed as "hellish".

Definately not a place you want to see close up andpersonal.
