I measured the center at 360 miles away from South America - quite a long way off to the south. . There's no dry air over land to move into Ivan, so that is not a factor. Ivan was zipping along at 20ks and most likely ran into a region of speed shear aloft. Winds aloft didn't quite match those near the surface.
