2 MB drop in 1.5 hours. Amazing given the structure of the storm needs improvement. Watch out when it does improve.

the eyewall is closed, which means it has nearly completed another eywall replacement....look for honestly 165-170 mph winds soon.

Isn't it though? I mean it is maintaining cat 5 with a weak NW quad...and it is keeping ~920mb pressures at the bottom end of a cycle.

Have you also noticed the hurricane force winds have extended out to 105 miles now. This storm is alot bigger than Frances!!!

I made a topic about this the other day that talked about this one resembling Frances in the Gulf of Mexico size-wise. Global models are forecasting it to grow bigger...STILL.

I think this translates to:

Storm IVAN: Observed By AF #866
Storm #09 in Atlantic Ocean
Maximum Flight Level Winds Were 153KT (175.95mph) In NW Quadrant At 0827Z
Date/Time of Recon Report: Monday, September 13, 2004 7:49:00 AM
Position of the center: 20° 17' N 84° 03' W
Minimum Height Measured At Standard Level Of 700mb: 2356m (Normal: 3011)
Maximum Surface Winds Were: Not Estimated
No Bearing From Center To Estimated Surface Winds Was Measured
Maximum Flight Level Winds Near Center Were 132KT (151.8mph) From 215°
Maximum Flight Level Winds Were Measured 012nm (13.799999999999999miles) From Center At Bearing 126°
Minimum pressure: 917mb (27.08in)
Eye Wall Was Characterized As Being: CLOSED
Eye Form Was Characterized As Being C30
Center Fix Established Using: Penetration Radar Wind Pressure Temperature
Center Fix Established At Level(s): 700mb
Navigational Accuracy Measured At 0.1nm
Meteorological Accuracy Measured At 1nm

My question is the maximum flight level winds...what does 175.95mph translate to at the surface?

There's a newer version of that up at flhurricane that tells you.

The NHC has had much previous discussion on the conversion of the Flight Level Winds in the past and it is basically different for each storm dependant on each ones characteristics.

My understanding is at present for Ivan the NHC is using an estimate of 90% of FLW to calculate the Surface Level Winds. So otherwise about 158 mph.

Still moving more westward than northward....

Last vortex was:
B. 20 DEG 13 MIN N
83 DEG 54 MIN W

this one is

B. 20 DEG 17 MIN N
84 DEG 03 MIN W

That's 4 min north, 9 min west.
