OV Flooding Potential

#1 Postby meso_jr » Mon Sep 13, 2004 8:39 am

Hi all...hope you are all well and are safe.

Frances created a massive flooding disaster in many parts of the Eastern U.S, including my beloved Ohio :( Although Dayton saw almost no rain, parts of Eastern and Southern Ohio were simply inundated. My home county (Belmont) in East-Central Ohio saw tremendous flooding. My parents and family still lives there, and although they were high above the flooding, the impact has been severe. Apparently areas that haven't flooded in decades flooded last week.

I am growing very concerned for all of Ohio now that mets are indicating that although Ivan may spare Florida, that western track puts Ohio right in its bullseye. I have heard that the storm may stall somewhere over Tennessee, which would spell a disaster for a lot of people. Even the mets here in Dayton and Cincy are frustrated and concerned about a flooding catastrophe.

Any guidance you all can suggest would be great. I am not worried about flooding here in Dayton (we haven't flooded since 1913 after we built our walls), but my friends and family back in Eastern Ohio.

If you hear any information about anticipated rainfall in the Ohio Valley, please post it here or email directly at stanford.4@wright.edu.

I am worried- our hilly terrain and clogged creeks won't take much more rain...this week is going to be horrible for a lot of people.

Stay safe

Jay

Hey Jay. I live in Harrison county just north of Belmont. We recieved massive flooding throughout most of our county including my hometown of Jewett. Places that have never flooded before were completely underwater. Water St. usually has a tiny bit of water on it was a raging river this time. The pressure was so high in the sewer lines from the water that it was blowing man hole covers off the roadways and into the air. Toilets were doing the same in many peoples bathrooms. I think the last I heard, over 100 homes had to be pumped out and recieved massive damage. There was upwards of 6 feet in many basements. FEMA and emergency management people were in to estimate damage and give people some relief money to clean up. Dumpsters have been set up all over town to get rid of junk or anything ruined by the floods. I think we ended up getting around 6" of rain. Definately the worst flooding this town has ever seen. If we get another impact from Ivan, it wont take half that much to flood like this again. Everything is so saturated from Frances and the wet summer we've had. Hopefully he moves farther east! Keep in touch Jay. I will have alot of info on rain and the weather being I'm in the heart of East Central Ohio. Get ahold of me on AIM if you can. Take Care.

flooding after Ivan will likely be very very bad. Stay safe and use common sense around flood areas.
