Sorry, what's ERC?
I've been reading everyone's input here for a few days since Charley and Frances have given me first-hand experience with canes. I've learned a lot in this short time, however this acronym's got the best of me tonight.

Eyewall replacement cycle. (And I'm pretty new too - you'll get it, don't worry.)
In many major tropical cyclones, the storm will undergo an eyewall replacement cycle. In this process, the eyewall contracts to a smaller size, and outer rain bands form a new eyewall. This new eyewall weakens the original, and eventually replaces it completely. During the replacement cycle, the storm weakens, sometimes dramatically, but afterwards the storm will often be stronger than before. On rare occasion, additional concentric eyewalls will form. http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Eyewall

ERC is an Eyewall Replacement Cycle where the inner eyewall collapses due to weakness from the pressure and a developing outer wall replaces it often times a much larger diameter...it is cyclic in nature but a bit extreme with Ivan

Look at all those red-orange bands
being spun away from the center

Thanks for the explanations! There are many of us "newbies" on this board trying to learn from you experts.
Having someone take the time to explain the terminology is very welcomed!
