Something for Trivia Buffs - Storm in the Med.?

At some point I remember an old Met7 pic of a storm in the Med.Sea that might have been a cyclone. But to my knowledge there has been no documented cyclones there - maybe someone else knows. Anyway there may be a new candidate.

While I don't see anything special in the image you post, there has been record of tropical cyclone-like systems in the Mediterranean. See the web page of Dr. Jack Beven (a TPC forecaster) here for images of one in 1995:

I think they are more like polar lows myself.

Interesting...

It really does look like a new candidate for "tropical storm" development just south of Italy. I'll have to look at the SSTs and satellite animations to determine...If it is, we have another history making "cyclone"...

System appears to be moving toward the ENE and should make landfall within the next 12 hours. I really don't think that's enough time for it acquire enough tropical characteristics to be referred to as a "tropical storm".

Still though, it appears to have a few "tropical" characteristics...those being small low pressure center with convection around it...

Has it got a chance.Actually just last year a tropical depression formed in the med and gave parts of Italy 500MM of rain!!!

We might need to start watching the med every summer! Then durning the winter the south Atlatnic!

i think we should at least consider it as global warming is heating both these two up,and during August and September the sea is hot enough to support tropical formation,just.

By the way this loop looks like it appears that it could very well be a system. But it appears that most of the convection is to the northeast of the center? http://www.eumetsat.de/
