Surge in Tampa Bay?

#1 Postby Jabba » Sat Sep 25, 2004 9:13 am

I'm sure everyone has seen the "doomsday" scenario for Tampa Bay if a major hurricane hits just north around Tarpon Springs ala the 1926 hurricane. I was just wondering if surge is possible in Tampa Bay from a an inland Hurricane hit. For example, if a hurricane came across the state and exited just south of Tampa Bay, could there be a storm surge under certain conditions? Or for there to be serious storm surge, does the hurricane have to come straight from the ocean?

Do you remember the major coastal flooding/surge from Frances just a few weeks ago? IF I remember correctly, it was huge, and many roads were closed near the city.

It appears to me that this is going to be very close to Francis here in the Tampa Area. Our impacts will be greatest once Jeanne is to our NE. When that happens the winds will switch to out of the SW driving the water into the bay. The key will be how far inland Jeanne comes.

Well, I know there was coastal flooding from Frances since I was forced to wade through much of it to get to my grandmother's house, but I thought there was a technical difference between coastal flooding and surge. In any case, it was only really bad on one major street, and a few select neighborhoods.

Technically we shouldn't get surge just wind driven tides. The net effect is the same flooding lol

 Agree MF Dolphin, the key is the winds. Once they come around to the south and southwest, that will drive the water up into Tampa Bay. Frances caused tides to be 3' -6' above normal.

hmmm.. so I should go help & insist my parents hoist up the furniture in Shore Acres (flood-prone area in St Pete)? My mom is sure it won't be a problem but then again she's rather apathetic right now.

Shore Acres tends to flood easily. I expect at least the same conditions as Francis maybe a little worse

Rainband and mf Dolphin - you guys are in my neck of the woods. There is a post that says that we are under a hurricane watch or warning. I can not find anything else on that except here. Do you guys know anything about that and where I can find it? Why are the local mets not making an announcement if that is the case?
Thanks in advance
