I'm volunteering this week atop Mt Washington, N.H., and just experienced a wind gust of 69 mph over the last hour while hanging out on the observation deck. Though this figure may not be all that impressive for Mt Washington, the sheer power of that sub-hurricane gust makes it easy for me to say that I would never wish winds like that on anyone and anything that isn't fully protected.
My prayers go out to those in Florida!

231 mph gust was the highest recorded.
Winds routinely exceed 100mph in the winter. Hiking to the summit is not a good idea after September, as snow and strong winds can occur even this early in the season! There is an outdoor section of the observatory where observers who succeed in walking completely around it in 100mph wind without holding onto the the railing get their name inscribed in a list!
