Why would Gaston and Alex be retired? They weren't majors at landfall. Gaston was only a TS.

Yes but Gaston did considerable damage to historic Richmond..

and Alex was a borderline major.. They both were very destructive

I'd iagree on Charley, Ivan and Jeanne. Alex was a noteable storm but that doesn't qualify it for retirement. Gaston did some damage but again I don't think it was enough for it to be dropped from the list.

Those names sound about right. I think that Gaston may be retired because as you said it did a lot of damage. I wonder whether it will be upgraded to a minimal hurricane in the later analysis. Also, Alex did get pretty strong - and it was a record breaker, so that would seem reasonable. If it does get retired that would be the 3rd 'a' name to be retired from this year's list of names.

Alex will defintely NOT be retired. Having 100 mph winds and not killing anyone doesn't qualify. It's unlikely Gaston will be.

Charley, Frances, Ivan, Jeanne IMO.
