Just thought this was interesting, I'm sure it'll look pretty good during the day.

Here is something you can keep a eye on!
http://www.pnsn.org/WEBICORDER/GREEN/SE ... 93000.html

Also Mt.Rainier has picked up alot over the last 24 hours...Looking back over the week there was hardly any earthquakes up there. Now it is picking up big time...Mt.hood is heading that way slowly to...It looks like these Volcanos are waking up around me...

Scientists are mystified over Mt St Helens...
the same way I was mystified over how
hurricane Ivan skirted islands... as if... it
was intelligently controlled... the volcanoes
in the Pacific Northwest ... and earthquakes
in California... certainly bear watching

Volcano's activity puzzles scientists

COMUSA - Scientists pored over data and wracked their brains Tuesday to determine the cause of a frenzied pace of tiny earthquakes at Mount St. Helens.

Thousands of earthquakes over the past week marked the most serious activity since magma last boiled to the surface of the Southwest Washington volcano in 1986.

"We're still a little bit mystified," said Carolyn Driedger, with the U.S. Geological Survey in Vancouver. "

The devastation we have seen in Florida would be nothing compared to what Washington would see if Mt Rainier did something. I read an article several years ago that it would implode (something about the fragile structure) rather than explode and all the mudslides would engulf thousands of people with little to no warning. I lived in the Tacoma area 20 years ago and went to Rainier all the time. The schools up closer to the mountain had evacuation drills in case the alarm went off that something was going to hit the fan...Just awful. You can pretty much plan for a hurricane but not earthquakes and eruptions...

I lived in Washington State for 5 years. I lived on the Kitsap pennisula and you can see Mt Ranier as clear as day from there. but then again you can see it from almost any place in washington. That would be devistating for anyone who lives in and around there. Hopefully it will calm down considering that i am moving back to Washington state in May. Daisy

I've been watching Mount St. Helens since Monday, and now to hear that Mt. Ranier and possibly Mt. Hood are also acting up, I have to wonder if this is all a chain type reactioin for something much bigger to come. Very worrysome for those in the NW states. What's going on up there?

I also noticed that a couple volcanoes in Alaska are on orange alert, one being not far from Anchorage. Also, there are a few in Russia that are on orange alert.

There is currently NO activity whatsoever at Rainier or Hood.

I hope you didn't see that thread on Free Republic this morning. Some genius saw the Mt. St. Helens activity showing up on the raw seismic records for the stations on Mt. Rainier (which is fairly close to Mt. St. Helens) and stupidly decided that meant that Mt. Rainier was acting up too.

Stuff like that makes me fear a lot of the neat raw science data that's on the net these days getting pulled.....

Both Mts Hood and Ranier are near enough to Mt St Helens to pick up the activity on their on their own seismographs--that's what your looking at on these charts.

Cyclone, that makes sense but this activity was not there yesterday on Hood or Ranier, that's why I didn't assume this. Can anyone explain this?? I'm not doubting this, I want to learn.

The maximum intensity of the tremors yesterday was in the 2.4-2.6 range, the maximums are now 3.0-3.4 and also the larger quakes are of longer duration.

Were there advisories issued before the eruption in 1980? I know it followed an earthquake, but I wasn't sure if it was almost instantaneously after the quake or if there were warning signs of an eruption.

There are two types of volcanoic activity. Some volcanoes like in Hawaii spew thousands of tons of magma (lava) but rarely violently erupt with explosive force. Other's known as fire and ice volcanoes like Hood, Ranier and Mt. St. Helens are prone to explosive eruption. If Hood or Ranier pulled a Mt. St. Helen's it's the last thing the city of Seattle would ever see. Scarey thought but total reality.

Seems the authorities are concerned about the *perception*
of Mt Rainer.

Test Of Lahar Warning Sirens Canceled

September 27, 2004

TACOMA, Wash. -- A test of Mount Rainier lahar warning sirens scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday in the Puyallup Valley was canceled, authorities said.

The cancellation came following news of seismic activity at Mount Saint Helens....

"There was a concern that some people might hear the sirens and be frightened that a volcanic event was occurring (at Mount Rainier)"....
