I don't understand all this talk about WNW movement and convection, Atlantic ridge, etc. Could someone just tell me what this storm means for the Englewood/Port Charlotte area of FL We're down on the SW coast between Sarasota and Ft Myers. I'm not totally brain dead, I do understand things like heavy rain, thunderstorms, run for your life, etc.

If it stays on track, the closest approach to you will be about 230 miles...and the sustained tropical storm force winds will be over 100 miles to your west. So, all you will see are some showers and breezy conditions.

Keep monitoring, however, as things can and occasionally do change.
Yes they do... Charley?
Not to belabor an old argument, but the Charley forecast track put out by NHC was quite good. The eventual landfall location was within the watch and warning areas in good time, and the ladfall intensity predicted 24 hours out was only off by one category.
The current forcast track for Arlene would have to be very much worse for Arlene to make landfall in the Florida peninsula.
That said, there could certainly be some severe thunderstorms associated with Arlene affecting the entire peninsula over the weekend.
