Vision and Mission of the National Hurricane Center

#1 Postby dhweather » Sun Jun 19, 2005 8:26 pm

I think this is noteworthy for all:

From http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/mission.shtml

Mission
(Why We Exist)

To save lives, mitigate property loss, and improve economic
efficiency by issuing the best watches, warnings,
forecasts and analyses of hazardous tropical
weather, and by increasing understanding
of these hazards.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vision
(What We Hope to Achieve)

To be America's calm, clear and trusted
voice in the eye of the storm,
and, with our partners, enable communities
to be safe from tropical weather threats.

And we don't even have to pay for the service (Well, not directly anyhow.)
I'll never understand how anyone can complain about the job these folks do.

Imagine if when a hurricane is threatening instead of getting hourly updates from the NHC you got them from Accuweather.Image

Of course if the NWS is prohibited from providing storm information and Accuweather has a monopoly of sorts how much to you think they would charge for that information....MGC

Now, lets compare - here's the ACCUWEATHER mission and vision:

AccuWeather Mission
To save lives, protect property, and help people to prosper, while expanding AccuWeather as a healthy and profitable business.

AccuWeather Vision
To be the world's best and most-used source of weather information.

http://wwwa.accuweather.com/company.asp ... page=about

-------------------
Save lives and profitable business in the same sentence reeks of
a "class" system, where the ones that can afford it can get it, while
the ones that can not are unable to. I suppose they get to perish
under the Accuweather system.

Of course, there's another jewel "To be the world's best and most-used source of weather information."

They are subtly suggesting that they want to be a monopoly. In order to
do that, they will need one trillion dollars or so to pay for the massive
global infrastructure that is in place thanks to the American Taxpayers
and NOAA.
