Hurricane Effects on Red Tide

#1 Postby TreasureIslandFLGal » Wed Jul 06, 2005 8:51 am

What is the effect of Hurricanes on Red Tide? The last gulf storm that brushed by brought us the Red Tide from down south because of its wind direction. But coul da strong storm coming close by take it away? Does the upwelling get rid of Red Tide or enhance it? Anyone know?
We've been having to stay away from the beach for the last 3 weeks and the bay behind our condo STINKS!
One good sign though, on my way into work this morning I saw dolphins in the bay as I went over the bridge -the 1st time since the Red Tide came into the intercoastal.

I'd like some info on this as well. Red Tide has been really bad this year. Usually doesn't last thing long does it?

The storm will rough up the seas and help dissapate the red tide. Super warm SSTs and stagnant water are what the red tide thrives off of, so some wind and waves should help clear things at. One problem though, if the wind is blowing onshore it will blow some of the fumes ashore before the red tide goes away and that will be a problem from anyone near the beach.

We've had red tide all along the west coast of the US since April, which is unusally long...yes, the beach stinks, but our beaches are all still very busy...we've seen lots of dolphins playing in the surf as well, and surprisingly no dead fish...our ocean temps actually dropped 10* in the last 2 weeks, and I wonder if the cooler water temps are keeping our red tide from being toxic?
