No Warning in Cuba

#1 Postby Cookiely » Mon Jul 11, 2005 5:48 pm

A resident of Tampa was visiting his sister in Cuba and he said they had no warning to prepare. I believe he said they just had time to get to a hotel when it came ashore. His sister lost the roof on her very humble abode and he is not able to send money to help her because of the present laws. They want to try and suspend the restriction on sending money to Cuba so families can help their loved ones. Why would you not warn your residents of a major storm? I don't understand

Interesting, there were hurricane warnings well in advance of the storm as far as I am aware. Even if they were inland, they should have known they were going to have serious effects.

Sorry to hear about the damage though. Hopefully timely repairs can be made and they get the money needed one way or another.

I don't know how, but warnings were posted several days before the storm got there and it was discussed in the television by Fidel Castro and Jose Rubiera (Shief Meteorologist). It could be that if they didn't have electricity before the storm got there, then they didn't get the information. By the way, the tourists were the first to evacuate.

Rather bizarre he/she didn't hear the evacuation orders as the policia and hurricane sirens where all over the place.

Lt. Col. Macareño said over one and half million people were evacuated to safe places, of them more than 280,000 just in Havana city. There are still one million people still evacuated as Civil Defense experts check on their houses so they can safely go back home.

Thanks to all of you for the info. The home was very poor and may not have even had electricity by the looks of it.

I don't think I would use that for a source and actually believe much of it. I doubt they did anything close to what is quoted there.

No need to make this political either, so all I will say is to go to their home page....;)

In Cuba the rivers flow with chocolate and lollypops sprout from the ground, while the children dance and sing. :larrow:

I've seen it discussed many times that Warnings are weel heeded in Cuba. I don't think any of us can say for sure since we don't know anyone down there or cna trust many sources. If anyone has first hand knowledge please speak up..

I find that very unbelievable to be honest... despite what we all think of Fidel and his government, he seems to be very good at evacuating coastal residents. 800,000 was the estimate on CNN and I believe it, otherwise, the death toll would have been ASTRONOMICAL(yes, the toll as it stands is bad, but the town of Cienfuegos was almost wiped off the map), but we all know there was no safe place in that town since they don't have basements or concrete-reinforced structures.

I could find it true if the house had virtually no contact with the outside world though.

Time to learn to use Google news and find your favorite spinned media then or watch it next time on the sat-TV. Few secrets with an island full of tourists and it's not the Warsaw-pact red block days anymore. Welcome to the world wide web, so start using it.

"Under a drizzle that seemed to cover all of Cuba, more than 1.5 million evacuees returned to their homes on Sunday as workers began recovery efforts in the aftermath of the worst hurricane to hit the communist nation in four decades.

Electricity, water and natural gas were being restored gradually in Havana, but other areas of central Cuba continued without service, state media reported.

"Cubans everywhere were out in force cleaning debris from roads and streets, removing fallen trees and posts and sifting through the rubble of downed homes. Public transportation also resumed on a limited basis, packed with residents trying to get back home, the state-run Prensa Latina reported."

Miami Herald - no Castro fans here

There's lots of places worse off and with more repressive governments
than Cuba.

That said, if Castro thinks he's so hot, then he should allow other political parties and free elections.

Being that the PA is gone, I respectfully disagree with your above comments, especially from that site.... And I'm a independent...;)

I'll stick to the weather here.

Tell her to smugle money into her pockets when she visits cuba. If she can't echange U.S dollars to Cuban money in Cuba then exchange it to something else first in the U.S that she can use. It isn't hard to smugle money into another country.

I had to re-read your sentence a few times because my eyes kept telling me that you thought Fidel was hot.

If you have proof that they weren't evacuated then post it. Disagreeing is fine when it's based on facts, but you have chosen to jump ship with no lifeboat.

It has nothing to do with partisanship either, and everything to do with firsthand knowledge in which I am privi too.

Now go use Google and get to learning something...
