storm experiences and decisions to stay put

#1 Postby jes » Tue Jul 12, 2005 9:33 am

Since I stayed in Mobile for Dennis, but do get terrified when strong hurricanes are coming my way I was wondering this morining what influences my decision to stay ---- then I finally realized that I compare all storms to Frederic ---- if the knots are 115 or close to that then I stay. Since Frederic's eye went right over my house and I didn't have any structural damage I assume that I'll be fine with a similar cane. Since Frederic was a Cat 4 I guess I don't really believe the media when they act like we're all going to die if we stay (even those of us 40 miles away from water). How many of you have been through a strong cat 3 or a cat 4 storm? If you have --- do you think that experience may have an influence on whether you stay put or evacuate? (talking about high ground people)?

It could be that previous hurricane experiences will cause people to leave for a big cane. I have never been through one, and I know that I plan to ride out anything that comes this way. I realize that my tune may change after I experience one firsthand.

NOT an expert or anything but I have always heard the general rule of thumb is to Run from the water and Hide from the wind. I do know, however, that every storm is different and effects of each storm will be different. I would suggest that you heed emergency management officials' advice and not base life or death decisions on some previous "benchmark" There is usually very good reasons that local officals make the announcements they do. I would listen to local officials over my past experience.
Just My 2 cents,

I live 10 miles from the coast in Gulfport,MS so I'm not going to see any storm surge. I don't have any tall trees around my house, Hurricane George made sure of that. What really worries me is the tornadoes that these storms can produce.
