Disabled mom won't leave!

#1 Postby LAwxrgal » Sat Aug 27, 2005 3:37 pm

Hello all,
I have a pretty difficult situation. My parish is St. John the Baptist. They haven't even called for a voluntary evacuation. I'm in evacuation zone 3, for those of you familiar with it.

The problem is my mom, she's 63, and won't leave! What's making this more difficult is that she's disabled! She's diabetic and in a wheelchair. She is insulin-dependent.

What should I do? My parish doesn't have a shelter -- even for those with special needs.

I haven't been able to contact my sister in Houston.

Physically pick her up and take her! I'm serious. I had to do this with my mom for Charley. I really can relate to what you're going through!

My best wishes for you and your mom.

LAwxrgal, inotherwords, took the words right out of my mouth. Pack up her stuff, get her medication together everything that is needed. Pick her up put her in a car and go! Best of luck to you.

Good luck in pursuading her! I assume you have tried to reason with her. Any neigbours/strong men around to help you move your mum into transport to get out of the area?

Also make sure you stop by the pharmacy on the way to get extra supplies of insulin and stocks to ensure she eats properly as the emergency services will be stretched to the limit when it hits.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions. My uncle (mom's sister) has said that we're leaving either late tonight or very early in the morning.

Just keep an eye on things! Guess if you get up very early in the morning and beat the traffic would be good! Good luck!

I'm looking at a damage simulation model showing peak winds near 100mph and a maxium 10ft surge for the parish (probably on the lake) if the NHC track varifies. There would also be long term power loss. You NEED to get her out.

For CHarley we evacuated at 3:30 a.m. It was an excellent time because a lot of people were going to wait until sunup. I would strongly suggest leaving tonight if you can.
