I-59 south of Hattiesburg - Disaster

#1 Postby Courtnay Mccullers » Tue Aug 30, 2005 10:35 am

I'm getting reports from a family friend from Picayune, MS who evacuated to Hattiesburg, MS that says trees, powerlines, water, and debris are scattered along all lanes of I-59 from Hattiesburg all the way to the LA border (and probably further into LA). He says there is minor structural damage in the city of Hattiesburg and it increases as you head south on 59.

He says it looks "much worse than Charlotte looked after Hugo" (He was in Charlotte at the time).

That stretch of highway is a disaster looking to happen with those shallow rooted pines on either side. A little rain to loosen the soil and a bit of wind and they just fall over. The same thing happened in Northern Alabama and Georgia after that blizzard in March of 93 or 94. We had to stay in Atlanta for an extra week while they cleared the highways enough to get out.

I am surprised we haven't heard of the same problem on 55 since the Mississippi DOT has pines planted along both sides of that highway.
