Ophelias tail caused WX in SFl-Tornado in Dade 9/10 2245EDT

#1 Postby DAVE440 » Sat Sep 10, 2005 9:11 pm

Local met says the wx we're getting now is ophelia causing instability in the atmosphere. He says these storms are a bit unexpected this evening and may repeat tomorow.

Was outside a bit ago getting some video. Will try to edit out some lightning stills later.

Tornado warning for Dade and Sever Tstorm Warning for Broward.
Pouring outside now.

Hollywood had a gust of 46.

We South Floridians love to let people know when we are getting a piece of the action!

Boca Raton is quiet now but maybe not later

There is certainly an impressive storm showing up on the Doppler radar - though I'm not getting the full brunt of it where I am.

It does look like the tail band of Ophelia, interacting with leftover boundaries from the day's seabreeze convection. It's interesting, a large thunderstorm seemed to pop up over Andros at exactly the same time the S. FL thunderstorm popped.

.

very interesting observation. That certainly proves it s some piece of energy that spun off of Ophelia.

Her tail is pulling moisture up....

Heres a good animated IR Satellite image showing that this weather is part of the tail.

If you check the radar link in my first post again you'll see the storms extending from dade into the atlantic now.

That blowup over Andros is a doozy. Rain starting to come down hard here now.

I wonder why Palm Beach is getting spared? I noticed today there was more moisture in Broward/Dade than Palm Beach. I saw some showers popping up with the local seabreeze convergence in Broward but not Palm Beach.

Stupid Ophelia tail.

Five minutes before I got home tonight, the sky opened up. When I had left home earlier, the radar was clear.

Nothing here in Boca Raton. The NWS Miami radar shows some huge storms in Miami/Ft.Lauderdale right now though

Just saw news. A local met was out on the road and saw a tornado touch down. Power out to 6000 customers in Dade. Reports of a roof being blown off but that's not confirmed.

Just reviewed my video. I got a killer lightning shot! Will have to edit out on the PC then will post it.

We had a crazy night last night. I saw a what looked to be a funnel cloud offshore near 25th and collins around 1045pm last night. This was with all the lightning which lit up the sky like it was daylight. Pretty cool storm.

There were 2 public reports of a tornado last night down there... they actually cut into Katrina coverage on CNN to talk about it. I caught the replay at 1am...

I just changed the subject title because it said tornado warning Now ....

...and the severe wx was LAST NIGHT.

Didn't want to give anyone the wrong idea.

Pics of lightning and tornado in dade from last nights wx system here...

We just had very heavy rain - I was driving up US 1 from Pinecrest to Coral Gables, and the puddles seemed to be accumulating on the streets *fast*. This one had to have dropped a couple inches in a short period, just like last night.
