ex-Maria and ex-Nate: 1 dead in Norway

#1 Postby HenkL » Wed Sep 14, 2005 11:31 am

At least nine were injured and one dead after a large mudslide took out several residences in Bergen early Wednesday morning. Massive rainfall carried by the remains of tropical storms Maria and Nate caused chaos in western Norway. Full article from 'Aftenposten':

Hello - I'm curious - is there a local, colloquial name for storms that arrive in Europe as the remnants of a hurricane? (Not a storm name, more on the order of "sirocco" or something like that.) Do such storms usually look the same, come from the same direction, etc?

Do they refer to them as "Maria" or "Nate" when they impact Northern Europe?

Weather offices in those countries refer to them as "ex-(name)", I think.

In general there is no difference between a former hurricane and a normal stormy depression reaching western Europe, although remnants of tropical systems usually do drop some more rain.
We don't have a local name for such a system, just call it ex-hurricane when it's obvious that a low is a remnant of a former cane. We do use the original names of the tropical storms when they do arrive over here, but always preceded by 'ex-'.

Yes, I wonder if P.K. could dig up one of those charts to demonstrate.

Here is a chart of today, where you can see ex-Maria and ex-Nate near the Norwegian coast.

Image

The other names on the chart are only used in Germany. The meteo institute from the University of Berlin names every high and low system. Nowadays everyone can suggest names (for instance the one you love), and if it is used has to pay for it. The money is used for meteo research. You can read more about this on:

These systems aren't referred to by name usually although sometimes the tv forecaster will mention it is the remnants of Hurricane ..... . As this passed between Iceland and Northen Scotland on Tuesday they had over 100mm of rain in places. Similar amounts were also recorded on the west coast of Norway. Here is the chart for Tuesday http://www.met.fu-berlin.de/de/wetter/maps/Analyse_20050913.gif, and http://www.wetterzentraleforum.de/archive/2005/brack/bracka20050913.gif
