Hey Guys! I'm Back! (Finally)

#1 Postby KLP124 » Tue Oct 04, 2005 8:20 am

Just got a call last night that said we have electricity!

We were very fortunate... we had one cedar tree in the back yard that fell and crushed our neighbor's fence... one cedar tree that was leaning at about a 30 degree angle and smashed out our bedroom window... and we lost a ton of shingles and have leaks all in our old plank roof -- but we faired a lot better than many people.

I've gotten to watch tv a little over the past few weeks and have been appalled about the lack of coverage Rita victims have received. Regardless of what's being reported (or not reported) things are NOT back to normal here. There are many, many people still without electricity, many people have lost their entire homes, others were severely damaged... it's been very bad.

Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. I'm working on a blog detailing our day to day happenings based on notes I made in my daily planner. As soon as it's finished, I'll post a link in case anyone wants to read it.

I am glad that you are safe and sound and that is the most important thing but the material damages can be repaired.

KLP124 - Thanks for the report. Glad to hear you are OK!! Here in this forum, we know how the news media is, and realize that things for those in both Rita and Katrina's paths are FAR from "normal", and will be for some time. My heart goes out to you, and all those affected. Please keep us updated.

Glad to hear you're ok KLP. I was wondering if you ever evacuated and hoping so. We lost power Friday evening and I couldn't check back with you. When I finally got to where I could see news, they only had CNN and they weren't giving much info on our area. A little here and there, but I knew that Fox News was in Beaumont and Port Arthur but that hotel hasn't gotten Fox yet. They had a sign saying "coming soon" - not soon enough for me though. Anyway, it's hard to get true reports from cable news...I've gotten better information from local Texas channels and eye witnesses. The Golden Triangle area has been devastated and with so many of our beautiful trees gone, it will never look the same. Sadly, a good portion of those trees went right through people's homes. :(
I haven't been able to get in touch with many of my friend's and neighbors so I don't know how everyone fared. All of my family has some damage, but our houses are still standing!

Anyway, good luck with the cleanup and so nice that you have electricity. I'm anxiously awaiting my turn.

Hey so you were in Jasper? That's where we were too. I think I would have been safer staying at my house -- at least there aren't millions of freaking PINE TREES here!

Jasper looks like a war zone. We were hearing 30-60 days without electricity since it's Jasper-Newton Co-Op. I'm just glad to be home.

Oh wow, you were in Jasper too. You should have came over and hunkered down with all of us. lol
We had several rooms.

Did you stay up all night as well? There was no chance of me sleeping. Way too loud...the howling winds and sounds of the trees crashing to the ground were too disturbing, especially considering there were so many trees near us. One fell way too close to the motel but thankfully none right on it. Only parts of the motel and roof peeled off. What a night and morning!! Yep, Jasper had never seen anything like that before! And home is much worse. :(

I'm glad you're able to get back into your homes in Texas.

I agree that RITA did not get the coverage that Katrina got. In my opinion, the only reason that Katrina got the coverage it did get was because of New Orleans. Take away the New Orleans aspect of Katrina and the news would not have covered it 24/7 as it did.

On the plus side.......at least you dont have Geraldo living in your front yard with lights on and camera's rolling.

That's a good thing.
