South Indian Ocean cyclones 1960-2005

#1 Postby HurricaneBill » Tue Oct 18, 2005 12:12 am

Ever wonder what past South Indian Ocean cyclones were named?

Well, I'm going to tell you anyway.

Earlier this year, I pretty much searched high and low on the Internet for info on the past seasons for the SIO basin. This was not an easy task due to not only overlapping years, but also overlapping basins.

Naming SIO cyclones began in early 1960. At first, only female names were used. By the 1970s, the names were becoming more exotic. Eventually, male names were allowed. Currently, SIO cyclone name lists are produced in the same way as WPAC lists. The lists consist of names selected by countries that tend to be affected by SIO cyclones. (Such as Madagascar, Mozambique, etc.) Countries with territories (Such as France) in the SIO also select names.

The lists consist of 26 names, one for each letter. Because the lists are not rotated, storms do not get retired. In fact, between 1960-2005, rarely have any names been used more than once.

Unlike the Australian and SPAC basins, there are few landmasses that get affected by SIO cyclones. Madagascar is often the most affected. La Reunion and Mauritus also get hit by cyclones. Although not as often, countries on the SW African coast get hit.

Several cyclones in the past have struck at powerful intensities.

Are the early intensity estimates accurate? (Including the presumption that unlabeled is < hurricane intensity) That list shows a phenomenal increase in intensity over time, with a big jump around 1980.

Yes, unlabeled = tropical storm strength or less.

The ones with (cclone strength) means they were at least Category 1. They could have been anywhere from 1-5.

The reason for the big jump in 1980 is because the JTWC began watching the basin.

In the 1960s-1970s, La Reunion monitored the cyclones based on satellite images. Since then, satellite images have improved greatly.

Just to note: La Reunion Tropical Cyclone Center is the RSMC (Regional Specialized Meteorological Center) of the southwest Indian Ocean basin.

La Reunion uses 10-minute sustained winds, while JTWC uses 1-minute sustained winds. However, unlike in the WPAC, the JTWC's winds usually are in good agreement with La Reunion's winds.

It's very nice.

Carol was the deadliest for Mauritius with winds exceeding more that 200km/h for more than 12hrs... people did not know the eye at the time and they went outside not knowing strong winds will blow from the opposite direction... tats wat my dad told me :D

Other notable cyclones affecting Mauritius which i know (I'm 18 :D ) is Hollanda and Dina...
