Will Cancun shelters hold up ?

#1 Postby Praxus » Thu Oct 20, 2005 4:17 pm

It is now looking like the mexican riviera will get a sustained lashing
from a category 5 monster. After seeing what a category 3 at landfall
can do in mississipi etc with katrina...and now we are talking a cat 5 or perhaps 4 at landfall...for much longer than katrina - do those people
know what is in store ? They moved tourists and will move locals
to shelters; but what shelter is safe in a stalled cat 5 ??

I'm worried about MAJOR loss of life unless they get people WELL inland.

We would think they know what's in store because of Gilbert. I would guess that, because of that experience, when they rebuilt they took shelters into consideration and built to higher code standards, but who knows?

he southern half of Cozemul did go through Emily, a 120KT hurricane already this year and had no loss of life.

This will hit as a strengthening cat 5. Remember katrina was a weakening cat 4 and hit the coast as a strong 3. A strengthening 5 would be hellish.

If that's true, it's incredibly stupid. I'm not sayign I don't believe it. People at Senor Frog's and Carlos & Charlie's are crazy.

Both places sit right on the water (albeit on the wets side of Cozumel).

I just heard on CNN that they're still offering Snorkel Tours in Cozumel. I don't guess they're that worried.

Are they talking about S.F's on Cozumel or in Cancun? I heard from a friend who toured the area that everyone was preparing to shelter. Maybe the folks in Cancun are crazy enough to party since that Sr Frog's isn't as close to the water as the one in Cozumel. Actually, now that I am thinking about it, Cozumel has been under curfew since 3pm, so I highly doubt it was their Frog's that is having a party.

Now there's one way to beat the storm, stay underwater until it goes by. LOL.

I assuemd Cozumel, but it coul dbe the one in Cacun. Still crazy. The resort area of Cancun (where Senor Frog's is, of course) is on a sandspit that sticks out into the Caribbean. Unlike Cozumel, a big cane could wash the whole peninsula away if it wanted to.

I have been to Cozumel twice. And I have been to Carlos and Charlies. The crowds over there are just about as wild as what I was used to seeing on Bourbon Street.

I just spoke to my son whose good friends were in Cancun. His friends got out but the father of one and two others got stuck. They are not being sent to a shelter but are set to ride it out on the 3rd floor of a hotel sitting right on the beach. They are still in contact but son didn't have details on why they were not moving. These are grown men (50-60 y/o) not kids so I'm guessing there is no place for them to go. The airport was a mess but at least Sean's friends are safe. I wish everyone on the YP good luck and the strength to get through this.

Lynn...

If they happen to have a car, I would try and get out of there and get to the west side of the peninsula. Third story on the beach, depending on the potential strength of Wilma is not safe.

The area is built to withstand powerful hurricanes after what happened to them with Gilbert.

Hurricane party at Sr Frogs?! Now that just plain stupid. That place will be blasted along with all of Cancun. The Cancun radar say it all. They are in for a serious storm for many hours.

many of the hotels on the beach at cancun are very large steel/concrete structures that will remain structurally intact. Also the beach rises quickely and the the various surge characteristics, other than intensity, are poor. Windows might get blown out, the first floor might get surged a little. Compared with the rest of the region, that is not nearly as well built, those large hotels are a relatively good spot to be.
