FEMA update on Wilma response 24 Oct

#1 Postby arlwx » Mon Oct 24, 2005 2:01 pm

FEMA held a press conference at 2:30. 2 M people without power, 124 shelters holding 36K, three medical response teams ready to go, most hospitals in good shape, urban search and rescue people in Collier CO and going into Lee as that was where the worst impact was, trashed mobile homes in Glades, and Lee and Collier and Monroe are special focus areas right now but expect more counties to be aided later. FEMA will respond with the prepositioned assets.

Please don't go back to places with ordered evacs until after it is declared safe to go home, as some roads are washed out. Be careful with generators, tools, etc.
Get some rest before working on yards.

The FL state update will be at 4 pm.

Ice stored is being used. MREs are low, so they are looking at kitchens to supply food. Long-term contracts will be let later.

Satellite phones are being used for state worker communication. Assessing various counties for need right now. This time, there are people in the EOCs, the NHC, teams doing damage assessment.

1-800-621-FEMA was put out for county officials to call. FEMA's role is to assist.
