novels about hurricanes

#1 Postby terstorm1012 » Thu Dec 01, 2005 12:25 pm

I mentioned in another thread that I like Sci-Fi so here are two sci-fi novels about hurricanes.

1. The Weathermakers, by Ben Bova. From the late 60s, it is probably out of print. You can probably find it in a used book store or your library.

2. Mother of Storms, by John Barnes. Late 90s. The sex is kind of gratuitous in this one so if you're underage or of a modest character, you might want to avoid this one.

Anyone have any others to add?

Not novels...but books about hurricanes (non-fiction):

"Isaac's Storm" - about the 1900 Galveston hurricane

"The Perfect Storm" - About the 1993 loss of the Andrea Gail

"The Ship and the Storm" - About the loss of the cruise ship Fantome in hurricane Mitch

"The Storm of the Century" - about the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane

These aren't just scientific fact books or educational books about hurricanes, but stories about particular people, towns, or areas mixed in and told with novel-like pacing, so it makes them almost like a regular fiction novel.

Stormy Weather = Carl Hiaasen The amazon.com blurb-

"Take one devastating Florida hurricane, a New York couple on their honeymoon, a skull-juggling but sensitive guy, one former governor turned Everglades hermit, two small-time con artists, a corrupt building inspector, two state troopers, a hapless insurance agent, and what do you have? The recipe for Hiaasen's (Native Tongue, LJ 9/1/91) sixth novel, a delightful romp that is by turns hilarious and moving. "

My Dad found an old book at a garage sale. It was a novel about a ficticious catastrophic hurricane striking a Caribbean Island while a local war/uprising was taking place. It was amazing how the author painted such vivid and descriptive scenes involving effects of high winds, flying debris, storm surge, evacuations, and people not preparing or believing the danger. I wish I could remember the name of it. I could not put it down until the end, think I was up most of one night reading it... anyone read this book, and if so, remember the name?

"Hurricane Watch" - a really well-written book even (especially?) for the novice, about the history of hurricane forecasting.

Just saw a new book out, "Hemingway's Hurricane," about Labor Day 1935. I think the title is a little midleading, but I'd read it.

I recommend "Storm of the Century" - I read it this summer while I was in the Keys. Pretty scary stuff. It goes into a lot of the politics of the situation too, which would be interesting after witnessing this Katrina fiasco.

Also, "Divine Wind" - sort of a coffee table book, but it has different stories about hurricanes, the history and the dynamics of them. Check it out on Amazon, it's very well put-together.

The perfect storm was in 1991

Thanks...didn't proofread well enough!

I was lucky enough to have moved to California just 2 months before, from Florida. My parents' house lost a fence and three citrus trees from that storm...more damage than Andrew, Jeanne, or Irene caused in our area.

Of course, I ended up shook, rattled, and rolled in the Northridge quake in 1994, and moved BACK to Florida! Just in time to get Irene, Frances, Jeanne, Katrina, and Wilma. ;)

Heminingway's Hurricane is a great historical book. It's about the Labor Day hurricane of 1935 and how it devastated the Keys. Apparently, Ernest Hemingway who lived in the keys was appalled at the lack of reaction to the plight of key's residents and made it his personal crusade to get help to the keys. He writes of the bodies laying along side the road.

Ugh! I have scoured the internet for this book, but can't find anything like it in various searches. Has anyone read this, anything sound familiar???

I found it!! It's called "Wyatt's Hurricane" by Desmond Bagley, written in 1966. It's available on Amazon, even though their search engine could not find it. The story is about a meteorologist, who knows a bad storm is coming, but has trouble convincing anyone, since they are all busy with the local uprising (war) about to take place. The fictional island reminded me of something small, hilly in the middle, like St. Thomas, etc.

The Windows of Heaven- very good, it's a part fictional story about the Galveston Hurricane. I know the author, he's a good friend of my dad.

Hurricane Camille: Monster Storm of the Gulf Coast -has all sorts of survivor stories and factual information. Also has an insert with some pictures.

I remember a book from my teens called, "Carolina Hurricane" - I think. It's about a boy caught on the Carolina marshes in a small fishing boat when a hurricane blows in. Probably a little easy for a adult, but scary for a pre-teen.
