MSG-2 Launches Over East Atlantic

#1 Postby P.K. » Thu Dec 22, 2005 7:33 am

The latest Eumetsat second generation satellite was lauched from French Guiana last night. Currently images of the eastern Atlantic on the NRL page are from Meteosat-7 which is due to go out of service shortly and be replaced by this latest satellite. (Due to be renamed Meteosat-9) The resolution is 1km compared to 2.5km for the first generation satellites so there should soon be some better quality images on the NRL site. :D

At €154million it better provide better images for the tropical East Atlantic.

P.K do you know if this new sattelite will be at 6 hour intervals or 3 hours? But anyway it's good news that new tools are up there. :)

Every 15 minutes compared to every 30 minutes on the first generation satellites. The MSG-1 images I can get are only updated every 6 hours, but that is the same as with some of the first generation images. The NRL update more often than this but they don't show the entire image.

Edit - I have access to the 15 minute MSG-1 images for uni work and yes they are good for a geostationary satellite. :D

meteosat has been at 15 minute intervals. However, due to international agreement, images may be released to the public only every 6 hours, unless one pays for more, like TWC (they release every 3 hours)

I agree! It's great news for better coverage of systems (including tropical systems) in the eastern Atlantic.

Meteosat-8 is but I thought Meteosat-7 only updated every half hour? (Meteosat-7 is a first generation satellite unlike Meteosat-8 which is a second generation satellite) I know Meteosat-8 has been up there since 2002 but the NRL site has still been using Meteosat-7 images.

Somebody once told me to avoid MSGs. Too much of them isn't good for you.
