Great waves here in Perdido Key, FL!

#1 Postby crazycajuncane » Mon Jun 12, 2006 12:21 pm

My buddy, wife and Kids and another buddy are out here in Perdido Key, Florida on vacation. Me and my buddies wife were sittin out on the beach and it was really super calm when we pulled in here on Thursday. We jumped on the jet skis and there were no waves to jump. So we are sittin on the beach Saturday afternoon and notice the waves finally picking up and I said.... how cool would it be to watch the waves coming in from like a Cat. 1 or 2 hurricane and she said... that would be awesome. We don't want to be here if another Ivan comes though... this area was badly devestated and still under much recovery last summer from Ivan.

We walk back up to the condo later Sat nite and my buddy says... Tropical Depression in the gulf and me and his wife say.... YEAH RIGHT.

Sure enough that sucker is a Tropical Storm now. We aren't really expecting much from the storm at this point. We are on the western side and we are catching 6-8 foot waves today. Yesterday we took thew jet skis out and rode some 4-6 foot waves. Today is another story. The chairs on the beach are like 100 feet back from yesterday and the waves are huge. I will try and get some pictures this afternoon if I can get my hands on a camera.

Anyway I just wanted to tell everyone hello and that the weather is phenomenial here. I do feel for the friends south of here, because it's dumping loads of rain on them. I heard they needed rain, but not 20-30 inches of it.

Ya'll take care!

The rain is really helping us. I've never been so happy about a 24 hour downpour ever.

I love Perdido Key! Post pics of the waves! When we go, we stay at the Peridio Key Resort which is actually on the Bama side.

That's where we stay also.

Cajun, all in all, how is that area this year?

Are stores, restaurants, etc. all open and running?

I agree! I just took a lunch/smoke break and was standing on the shoreline at Pensacola Pass. The waves are breaking constantly through the pass and the sky to the Southeast is definately "tropical". Very breezy and cool looking. Just wish we could get some rain out of it.

Ivan was in 2004, not 2005 and the area has made a huge comeback since then. Most anything that planned to reopen has reopened. And there is a lot of new in the area too.

Oh, this is interesting.

We just got back from Pensacola last week. And there was still lots of construction going on.

Our hotel manager told us that they just got their hotel re-opened. He said it took them 2 years to get the new sand hauled in etc.

My sister had phoned Gulf Shores last month(which is next to Perdido Key) and they told her restaurants and stores and such would be RE-opened on Memorial Day.

I was just checking to see if it indeed got opened on Memorial Day.

I guess from what you are saying it did.

Thanks for the info.

I WISH it was a 24 hour "downpour." Aside from a fairly heavy band that came through about 12:30pm that lasted about 30 minutes, most of it has been extremely light to nothing at all!

Very interesting indeed. I haven't been to Pensacola, but I can tell you the GS/Perdido area is in full swing. Yes, there's a lot of construction but a good bit of it is NEW construction. Restaurants, stores, etc. are open and a new amusement/entertainment complex is almost complete at Orange Beach. In fact, they opened the entertainment portion with a Hank Jr. concert a few weeks ago. Even though rebuilding is not 100% complete, the Flora Bama is also open. There's no reason to stay away from the area at all. The beaches are pristine.

Capt-n- fun on Pensacola Beach increased their square footage to 28,000 feet. They have a TV show called RFL and they have a myspace website...

I know the annual Blue Angel airshow over Pensacola Beach is still a go and most if not all stores on the Boardwalk at Pensacola Beach are open. Thats all I can think of right now.
http://www.Visitpensacolabeach.com might have more info.

This is just the news I wanted to hear. Excellent!

My sister and I will be heading to Perdido Beach Resort within the next month.

Do you know the name of the new amusement complex?

I hope the MS gulf coast can return as well as the Fla/Bama did.

From what I hear, they have a looong way to go, just as portions of New Orleans. :(

I was in Gulf Shores a week ago and things looked close to pre Ivan. Lots of trees down in gulf state park, lots of construction too. My favorite restaurant, Gulf Cost Steamer is back in business......MGC

Well I probably exaggerated the 24 hr part but we got some pretty bad downpours in our area, its really helping my lawn.

It is MGC! I would say that Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are like it was before that August day\night in 2004.

The Flora Bama has been open since last summer and all the rumors about it washing away are not true. It's there and hopping!

The beach looks 1000% better than last summer. There was nothing but trash and debris all over the place. There is still quite a bit of construction going on some of the Condos. The SeaSpray next door to Eden (where we stayeed) is still under repairs. When we went last summer they said it would take 2-3 years to get back to normal. Almost all the restaurants are open and everything looks great. I wouldn't hold back on visiting this great area. Let's just hope that this area stays clear of hurricanes for a long time. They underwent hell.

P.S. I got to ride some good waves. Now I'm back in Louisiana. We don't want no canes this year either.

A lot of the outdoor structures did wash away. The remaining portion of the building basically filled with sand and that's what was holding up the walls. Most of the roof was torn/washed away, exposing liquor bottles still sitting on the shelf. It was shut down for a long time.

Picture of the FloraBama several weeks after Ivan.

NOTHING has been done in over 20 months to rebuild the Gulf State Park Pier
