Remembering John Hope

#1 Postby cycloneye » Tue Jun 13, 2006 3:25 pm

Forgive me folks that almost this day was going to pass without typing something about somebody that I admired very much and I said it was the (Master of the tropics).Yes today June 13,2002 John Hope passed away and really my passion for hurricanes escalated after I saw John Hope doing the tropical updates in the late 80's. Every time he was on those updates I am my family paid close attention to what he was saying and there was complete silence at his moments. He has been missed in the years post 2002.Steve Lyons is very good and knows a ton about tropical weather but never he will put the shoes of the Master of the Tropics John Hope.

Aww Luis! Thanks for that. I don't think a season starts when for some reason it seems he should still be around, and I guess, in a way, he is.

He was so smart and so knowledgable.
I think he must have been a very nice man too.
I wish I could have met him.
Yes, he is still missed.

Man, John Hope was one of the best I have ever seen. I remember listening and watching him many years ago. He is badly missed by me, too! What a great, great person.

Great forecasters like John Hope are very rare. He had a passion for canes and the knowledge to back him up. He is very much missed.

Hope WAS the "Tropical Update"... never missed him when there was anything brewing. These used to be around 20 after, and either 5 or 10 before every hour/half hour. One felt assured listening to this sage discussing all the intricacies and ramifications of these very unpredictable storms. Thanks for the Memories.

Yes, I agree. He was amazingly knowledgeable and did not just inform and warn, but also taught. You really could see that he cared. Rest in peace, Hope.

Jim Cantore

I will never forget watching John Hope cover Hurricane Floyd, he was just the calmest most collected guy on TV, he would have been a great NHC director.

R.I.P old friend

The only person at TWC who compares to him is Jim Cantore. I know Jim is no tropical expert but he has honed his craft to near perfection.

John never played to the camera he talked to the people. Never afraid to buck TWC, Steve Lyons or even the NHC he spoke his mind with years upon years of expertise to back it up. He was perhaps that last true real giant in his field on TWC and as far as I'm concerned one of the few that gave it the class it used to have before they went to t.v. met style forecasters. I wonder how many of the "new" breed could draw isobars the old fashioned way? Rest in peace John!

Rest in Peace John. We love you and you are greatly missed. I used to really pay attention when I would see John on TV. He really knew his stuff. Seeing his face and listening to him, made me get into the tropics more and more.

He was very good at what he did. I think Steve Lyons will be that good one day. He knows the tropics very well also.
