Saw this on the wires. Looks like that company and the NWS have come to an agreement for at least this hurricane season.

i tink you are correct weather predict doesn't receive public funding. as a taxpayer i would prefer to see nhc get the tax dollars for research and development rather than any school in florida. my feeling is that if the state of florida is going to allow this gray area i would prefer the pros get my money rather than a university.

NHC was not intended for research though
the pros in the research field arethe universities, and that is where the vast majority of the research money should go, along with HRD. NHC research should be restricted to JHT programs, which are specifically for applied research that has a sole purpose of improving the forecasts. The Superensemble could fall under that, but it was funded by the private enterprise

i thought superensemble was developed with some fsu dollars thus that would make at least part of it public.

Taxpayer dollars do go to Universities in the form of grants and subsidies for studies. It is a pain to get this money, but it is important to us none-the-less. It is also an important symbiotic relationship between the government and the Universities that we try to improve forecast predictions.
