If you're going back to the 1800's, the Great October Storm of 1893, aka Chenier-Caminada Storm, that killed over 2,000 people and by some accounts was the 3rd worst natural disaster in US History should be on the list:

Okay... well I thought perhaps it focused on US landfalls... but if not, then one October storm that stands out above all others, and that needs mentioning is the "Great Hurricane"...1780, I believe; far and away the deadliest of 'em all with over 22,000 dead in Martinique and Barbados area.

That is a terrible disaster. I would assume mudslides and flooding took most of the toll?

there has to be some other July storms that are to the level of Dennis and Emily right? I think any major hurricane that has made landfall in July should be historic.

It's so long ago, the records aren't clear; but I assume that's the case, Martinique is on the side of a huge volcano... so probably yeah. The VAST majority of deaths from Mitch, which is the second deadliest Atlantic hurricane, were decidedly from the flash floods and mudslides.

I believe Martinique had another major calamity when that Volcanoe blew it's top, possibly around the beginning of the 20th century... not sure... another 20,000 pluse dead tho'. They sure have had their share!

Then I'd put it as an August Storm...clearly that's what it was. IMO.

In terms of historic July hurricanes, and in response to Extremeweatherguy's post, a category 3 hurricane with a MSLP of 948 mb made landfall near the AL/MS state line, and, according to the second of the following two links brought major hurricane conditions to both AL and MS.
