Looks like a bathythermograph deployment flight.

.NOAA AXBT DEPLOYMENT: 27/1200Z DEPARTURE FROM KMCF FOR AN AREA
NEAR 26.0N 086.0W.

AXBT stands for Airborne eXpendable BathyThermograph. They drop them to study SSTs. Probably looking at the loop current. Research flight.

airborne expendable bathythermograph—(Abbreviated AXBT.) An expendable instrument that is dropped from an aircraft and used to measure the profile of temperature in the water column.
The probe consists of a thermistor in a weighted, streamlined case. It falls freely at a fixed, known rate so that the elapsed time can be converted to depth. It is connected by a thin, freely unwinding wire to a small buoy with a radio transmitter through which the data are transmitted to the aircraft, which continues its flight.

found this searching for it: Another device, an expendable bathythermograph (XBT) measures the sea's temperature at varying depths and indicates how SONAR waves are bent by layers of warmer and colder water.
I think they only want the SST's at different depths though...is that correct?
