Animal behavior

#1 Postby mascpa » Mon Aug 28, 2006 3:08 pm

Maybe a little off topic ...

Growing up in So. Fla., I was taught as a chile to watch the animals behavior for a clue as to what might be in store. All of the birds are gone today (except for one small wren that keeps flying back and forth like its in a panic). Even the squirrels are missing today. THey know more than we do so I, for one, am paying attention ...

They do infact "know" imo.. It has to do with the pressures.. Its like Fishing being best during a full moon. Fish are more active and if you try to pay close attention to your pet with a new moon, then again at a full moon I would be willing to bet you would notice them more "active" during the full moon

They know

#6 Postby Trying to Reason » Mon Aug 28, 2006 3:59 pm

The animals do know. I've been in the path of two large hurricanes in my life (Frederic in 1979 and Ivan in 2004), and both times the bird silence that preceded landfall was otherworldly. The gulls, the jays, the doves even the pigeons were all gone.

They know. What I want to know is where they go.

I will admit...normally here I will see one or two birds on the roads or in the yard...today I counted at least 5, 1 in the yard, and 4 in the road by the mailbox, they are just going nuts...never seen anything like it...I dont think it has to do with Ernesto, as its still 3-4 days away...just thought it was an interesting observation...

I think this has more to do with only noting positive occurances. In my daily bouts through the world I hardly see birds unless they're eating roadkill or are walking across the yard. Also, I would bet that people who post on this forum spend less time outdoors and more staring at computer screens when storms are approaching their areas.

Of course it could be true, but I'm skeptical as to the means. Lower pressures? Well, one would expect birds to fly away from cold fronts. That would lead to very tired birds.

Animals went nuts and broke out of zoos in Indonesia before the tragic tsunami.

There was an extraordinarily powerful earthquake. Hence the Tsunami. Its a fact that elephants can feel vibrations through their feet. So even if the actual 'shaking' wasn't strong there, it explains the spooking of the animals.

before TS Gabrielle (upgraded to a hurricane later) hit FL in 2001, all the sharks on the west coast left. I saw that on TV a few days ago.

My husband and I use to breed birds and at one point had over 40. About 2 days before a system made it to us, our birds would all just go to the top perches and huddle in the corner of thier cages and stay there. The ones we could normally handle very well would become nippy, and eating behavior also occured. No doubt in my mind animals can tell.

Chad, the kids are more active during a full moon, also...ask any teacher :)

As far as the animals go, I did notice the day before Katrina that there didn't seem to be as many birds around.
On the afternoon after the worst of Katrina had passed, I saw several seagulls in the neighbor's pond! (we're a LONG way from the gulf).

My Lab was having a good time chasing limbs blowing through the yard during Katrina. He seemed to enjoy the whole affair. As long as there's no lightning and thunder mixed in....then's it's more like Scooby Doo.

Yeah, they do know. It's a remnant from the wild, a survival mechanism. That said, there wasn't a single bird to be found flying around for days before Katrina. It was chilling and creepy.

I gave up believing the animals in 2004.
My friend lived on the coast, north of Tampa. Her dogs would not stay inside the house when Ivan was projected to hit. When she let them outside, they all dug holes. They were obsessed with digging as deep as they could. One got to 6 feet deep before she really got nervous. She figured they knew something that she didn't, and she evacuated.
Of course, that area didn't get anything worth leaving home for. We were both surprised that the dogs were wrong.
