Geographically challenged...

#1 Postby Bella » Sat Sep 02, 2006 1:40 pm

Happy Saturday, everyone!

I have a question for all of you that are watching these waves/invests out there....

My mother is going on vacation Sept. 10th to the Turks and Caicos (sp?) for a week. I'm not familiar, at all, with where this is located in relation to these waves.

Last year, she booked a vaca to the Keys, only to have to cancel the day before she was scheduled to leave because of a hurricane (I don't remember which one, but it was around Halloween).

Anyway, I'm just wondering if there's anything out there that could impact her trip this year. I'd be very grateful for any info you all can pass on!

The Turks and CAicos are at the tail end of the Bahama Island Chain, north of Hispanoila. They're the most easterly and southerly of the islands, however they are still part of the United Kingdom and they are not part of the Bahamas politically.

I was there during the winter months so have no direct knowledge of how the Turks & Caicos officially prepares for and handles hurricanes. I can tell you, however, that the islands are quite advanced and it would not surprise me in the least if they have considerable shelter and emergency management capabilities.

I assume she is staying in Provo (Providenciales)? I was there on my sailboat but know that there are a number of direct flights - even in the worst case, getting out should not be a problem.

I'm sure she will enjoy her time there!

Thank you, Photoguy. Tell you the truth, I'm not sure where she is staying! Guess I will know when she sends me her itinerary. She's been there before and absolutely loves it. Your words on how advanced the islands are does give me comfort.

I'm crossing my fingers for her and doing a little "hurricane stay away dance". I think she's nuts booking a trip anywhere down here (there) during hurricane season, but they make it so much more affordable.
