Most tropical systems in the Atlantic at one time - 4. Has happened many times. 1998, 2004, and once in the 1890's there were four hurricanes at once, one which struck NYC.

Connie and Diane struck the Mid Atlantic about a week apart in AUgust 1955

September 25, 1998 had 4 simultaneous hurricanes

Hurricane Georges, Ivan, Jeanne and Karl

from the Karl 1998 report

Karl became a hurricane near 1200 UTC 25 September while centered about 550 n mi east-southeast of Bermuda. At this time, Hurricane Georges was over the Straits of Florida, Hurricane Ivan was over the North Atlantic about 500 n mi west-southwest of the Azores, and Hurricane Jeanne was over the tropical Atlantic about midway between Africa and the Lesser Antilles. Thus, Karl became the fourth hurricane to co-exist over the Atlantic. According to records at the NHC, the last time four hurricanes were in existence in the Atlantic at the same time was on August 22, 1893. Records also note that on September 11, 1961, three hurricanes and possibly a fourth existed.

Yea, only about 30 hours apart I believe, I remember tracking them like it was yesterday, a sure indication of things to come.

I remember watching them (I didn't track really then). I came home from school and Charley had exploded and had shifted east. I was pretty shocked.

Yep in 1955 Connie and Diane both hit NC one hit Aug 15 and the other hit Aug 21, however one came over the outer banks and the other came ashore in the Cape Fear region. As for distance between landfalls I know Bertha and Fran in 1996 both came ashore in the same spot and the difference between them at there last postion plots before landfall ( about 25-30 miles south of Cape Fear) is only about 10 miles apart.

The most tropical cyclones ever at one point is 5. This occurred in 1995 (Humbero, Iris, Jerry as a TD yet still a tropical cyclone, Karen, and Luis), and once in 1971 (Edith, Fern, Ginger, Heidi, and a TD that became Irene).
