Not sure about 1990; I didn't start following the tropics until after Bob 1991, but on review look like it was the same.

BTW The above were all less active than 2006 thus far, to this same date.

dixie the 9/4/2 numbers so far for 2006 at this date (September 29th) is a little above normal if you believe it. :) The perception is of a slow season but the difference has been more fishes than landfalls. And still are two months left.

I can't recall which year exactly, but, during the El Nino of the early-mid '80s, we had one particular September and October that were just as quiet...

The early to mid 1980s was quiet. 1991 to 1994 was quiet. Same goes with 1997.

Lets see, Iris wasn't until Oct 5, it was also an example of a US "No Hitter" in which no land falling hurricanes struck the United States. In fact the only land falling hurricane for the entire season was Cuba on November 4 (Michelle Cat 4). Lots of fish that year too. It was waaaay back in 2001. (yes I realize it was also the year of Allison, but Allison was not a hurricane)

Luis, yes, I am surprised that we're a little above normal so far this year. Maybe there will be an October surprise -- though we really don't need one :D

1985 was active. Let me correct myself. This is based on ACE.
Quiet
1981-1984
1986-1987
1991
1993-1994
1997
2002

Active
1979-1980
1988-1990
1999-2001
2003-2005

2006 is considered a more normal season.

Here's what it looks like on a graphic to date. Not exactly a "slow" season. I'd say it's more of a "non-effective" season for the U.S.

Right now with Isaac as a hurricane the 2006 numbers are 9/5/2,an average season with the exception of the hurricanes which is 5,one below the average of 6.

After the 2004 and 2005 seasons, we are all kind of shocked that NO hurricanes have hit the U.S. or Caribbean islands. However, ask people along portions of the Eastern Shore of MD and down the Chesapeake Bay how bad Ernesto was for them. Even SE VA had significant flooding similar to that caused by Floyd. It will be interesting to see if in the post season report, the NHC upgrades Ernesto to a hurricane at landfall. The air pressure supported cat-1 but whether or not ILM ir MHX radar, coupled with surface obs and aircraft data can squeeze out 64 knot sustained, even for 1 minute, remains to be seen. Hey- Cindy made it and so did Gaston and that radar presentation of Ernesto near and after landfall was very impressive.

If Ernesto had avoided interaction with Cuba, we would have had a cat 3 storm hit right up the middle of the most populated areas of Florida, with Miami thru Palm Beach on the dirty side..who knows the damage that would have caused the state..we have been very, very lucky this year..

as the saying goes, it only takes one..IMO, that would have been Ernesto

I wonder if the lack of storms much like the 80s and 90s is gonna mean a winter like back then? I havent looked it up or nothing but it seems that since the surge in tropical storms and hurricanes in 1995, our winters have mostly been mild. It seems like if I remember right of the years mentioned above, 1993 was a cold winter in fla and 1997 was a wetter winter in fla? I think we may have a winter like on of these years before the canes.

The USA needed a hurricane season like this one after the disasterous seasons of 2004 and 2005. Hopefully next season will be one like this one. I hope this El Nino lingers through most of next season......MGC

The last SF cold winter (SUSTAINED) I remember was 1989-1990..however, it can't touch the spell from the late 60s thru the 70s, when winters were always cold by Florida standards.. In 1977, it snowed in Miami(i broke my car's windshield that morning trying to de-ice it by pouring a bucket of hot water on it..not exactly a MENSA moment) :D
