Rappaport Passes on NHC Director Job

#1 Postby MWatkins » Mon Nov 06, 2006 4:53 pm

Interesting...Ed won't be the next director.

Unfortunately, it is my opinion that the Director role has become too political for a science person like Dr Rappaport...

He probably saw all of the BS Mayfield had to go through with all of the idiots in FantasyLand on the Potomac and decided "No Way".

It's sad that politics made it into an important place that has to do with the lives of millons of people. Now who may want to take the leading roll in the NHC?

If it is given to someone who's owed a political favor, let's hope that it's someone who is willing to delegate to people who know what they're doing.

It sounds like he just didn't want to be away from his family for 4 months of the year. There were no political reasons mentioned in the article.

You are right, nothing in the article even remotely implies that.

The opinion that the job is too political is my own...which is why I included the phrase "in my opinion" in the post.

My vote is for Ray Nagin. Who else knows as much about hurricanes and what NOT to do when a big one threatens a city?

Even aside from the politics, there's a heck of a lot of administrative work in a job like that. I can entirely understand why he wouldn't want to be saddled with it.

He did not pass for political reasons.

Those comments are not even close to reality in this case

Thanks for that update MW - it must have been a difficult decision for Ed, but, the reality is that the NHC Director is in travel status up to 200 days out of the year...

That is one big issue with many Federal positions such as this one - employees are often required to travel a great deal, and, that can be a problem, especially if the person has a spouse and children at home - family should always come first.

Thanks,

Frank

This is why I commend Max for getting out now. He is not even 60 yet, right? He will have some great time with family and friends for many decades to come. Max has served us all well and has set the bar to a new height. He certainly taught me a lot over the years and encouraged my work in the remote camera project that we now have. He listened to his body and mind and knows it is time to relax and enjoy life. Hats off to Max.

As far as a replacement, Landsea would be excellent. Young, energetic, research oriented, good on TV and has a great personality. We'll see. If not Chris, then perhaps Jill Brown- remember her?

I wonder if Beven or Stewart would think of taking the job? Heck Avila for that matter.

My impression from them at the hurricane conferences this year would be no. They like forecasting vs the limelight and politics.

How about Bob Gross or what ever his name is from Boston? He coined the "Perfect Storm" term, at least that's what the movie depicts. Funny, I read the book and cannot remember who really coined that phrase- NWS or the TV met from Boston. I am getting old- can't remember what I read. Anyhow, he would be good since he could assign cool names to future monster hurricanes.

Or- how about Dr. Lyons. He is Mr. "Good News" on TWC. You ever seen that? When there is a tropical wave or a storm or even a hurricane, Dr. Lyons can come on and poo-poo the whole excitement thing by pointing out that there is abundant dry air or shear or cold water- you name it- and then he goes on to say, "so that's good news". I bet he was just loaded for bear with "good news" this season....
