Say you wanted to make an animation of Hurricane Wilma's explosive development phase. All you'd have to do is go through the archives to find Wilma (click "year" and go to 2005), then click GEO IR (color or b/w) or VIS (IR is generally better, as VIS isn't always available, and it's hard to stitch them together). Then, click "animate", then "ADVAnimate" on the animation page. From here, you can choose "AVI", and custom-build your very own satellite animations, which can be saved onto your computer on the next page.
The only limitation is that you can only choose up to 16 frames at a time, but you can do this as often as you want. This also works best in Firefox (indeed, there's a disclaimer saying that it doesn't work in IE).
Here are a couple animations I made in Windows Movie Maker from AVIs I built (both are small enough to work even on dial-up):
Typhoon Chebi rapid intensification, color GEO-IR
Hurricane Wilma, from 975 to 882 mb, b/w GEO IR
Interestingly, some of the Wilma images were tagged "24E.NONAME" for some reason.
