The few times I met him, he seemed like a great guy. He will be missed I am sure.
You can check it out on their website, WFLA.com, but it has been busy with traffic.

This is from the video on their page:

Tonight we are shocked, saddened and heartbroken to report that our friend and fellow worker John Winter is dead. Hillsborough Sheriff's deputies say Winter died of a self-inflicted gun shot wound. Winter joined WFLA-TV in 1994. He grew up in Seminole and attended Seminole High School.

WFLA's John Winter Found Dead

By MIKE WELLS The Tampa Tribune

Published: Apr 5, 2007

LITHIA - WFLA-TV meteorologist John Winter died Thursday afternoon at his home.

At 3:30 p.m., an anonymous caller reported the death to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

Carter later told WFLA News Director Don North that deputies are investigating Winter’s death as an apparent suicide, North told the Tribune.

North notified his staff of Winter’s death at a gathering in the station’s newsroom.

Prior to WFLA, Winter, 39, worked at KGBT-TV in Brownsville, Texas. In his two years there, he was the meteorologist on the morning and noon broadcasts. He carried the American Meteorologist Society seal and was a graduate of the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Arts degree in meteorology.

Winter grew up in Seminole and attended Seminole High School. His interests included weight lifting and various outdoor activities.

Such a great on air personality. I would have never ever guessed he would be that down that much. I guess you just don't know though. Pretty scary when you consider Dungy's kid too. I have kids and it just seems that you don't know what is going on many times until it is too late.

He was also close to ABC with Jack Winter. It is now said it was a self inflicted gun shot wound.

Forgive my skepticism, but who calls anonymously to report a death if it's a suicide? Doesn't that just beg for suspicion?\

Edit -- nevermind, just read the article and he apparently shot himself as deputies were entering his house...and there was a note.

Sad....

That's terrible! Such a horrible thing.

Um, I don't really understand why he would call the police and then shoot himself as they enter.

I guess to get their attention?
