This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

What do you consider yourself?

#1 Postby cycloneye » Fri Apr 06, 2007 5:24 pm

What do you consider yourself? A -removed- person or not?

Of course I am not a proffesional whiscasting enthusiastic who says that every blob is going to develop. However I wish that the storms and hurricanes that form,do so when conditions are right and not when the pro wishers want to form from every cloud. Then I like to begin to track them and see the structure of the systems in sat images, also the most stronger and impressive ones in open waters without affecting any landmass especially if those are major hurricanes.
I am honest to say that I can see a Tropical Depression,a tropical storm to a cat 1 hurricane without having extensive damage in my area to clock the winds in my anemometer, but that's all for me.

Hey guys and gals,be honest about this. :)

Cycloneye, Can't deny being fascinated, forces of nature and all that. I'm interested in watching development and steering and trying to understand and anticipate cyclogenesis...but absolutely not at all bummed out when shear blows 'em apart or they go harmlessly to sea. Anymore.

I've been on here now five years (was KLDave at first). Florida and Louisiana '92 and '05 changed a lot for many of us. I'll put it this way: I used to be an eager tracker. Now I'm an anxious one.

Certainly there is an inherent element of -removed- in all of all us for if hurricanes NEVER effected land then why have any interest in learning about them? Looking at the members on this site, most of them are in areas where hurricanes could hit. An analogy would be why an astronomer seeks to know about a science that is so far away from earth. It's because astronomers seek the two keys questions of where we came from and if there is life elsewhere -- both of which "affect" us.

I do not wishcast a major hurricane on anybody. Having gone through Frances, Jeanne, Wilma, Charley, and Katrina in Florida and seeing the destruction and financial long-term ramifications as well as short-term, I can attest experiencing the high of a hurricane is not worth it. The concept of missing school or work is intriguing at first but quickly loses its allure as you find yourself without elecricity for days and your hometown mangled in destruction.

Have a safe season all and lets just hope we can observe nature's beauty from a far this year.

Good topic Luis.

Not going to lie,I do wish for hurricanes to form.I just love seeing the force of nature in action and discussing about the storm with you guys is always fun.And ofcourse a hurricane always means good surf. 8-)

Although after Katrina and Ivan I am no longer fascinated by experiencing major hurricanes up close and personal anymore.I really don't know how to explain it though,it's sort of bittersweet for me.It's like tornado chasers love tornados, but ofcourse they never want to see a F5 plow through a neighborhood killing people.Just like I love hurricanes, but I never want to see communities get devastated by them.

Went through Andrew, Frances, Jeanne, Katrina, Rita, Wilma. Only Wilma was nasty here.

Would prefer to not go through more than a cat 1. Cat 1 is interesting and little damage happens (usually.) Other than that, thanks, but no thanks.

I went through Andrew in 1992, then Katrina/Wilma in 2005. Wasn't fun, that's for sure. I'm not a whishcaster(i noticed the word is banned, lol),but I worry when storms form.. maybe a little too much!

Oh, and go gators!:D

My only interest is that a hurricane is going anyplace else other than here. I don't care if they develop, becase they will. I just care if they are coming to knock down my house. I have spent a lot of money and time preparing for the next one. I hope that 10 years from now, I STILL have stuff in my hurricane box in its original packaging.

Here in Central Florida right now the temptation is to wish for anything that brings rain. I'd settle for a small tropical depression to just lazily drift across the state and drop some much needed water over a large area of the state. I find -removed- to be a maturation process. The young and the ignorant all want a hurricane to come their way and once it's over they all wish they never see one again. One poster is quite correct though we focus far to much on the wind speeds of these systems and not enough on the total danger of the system itself. I'm sure those that were in Houston for Allison never want to see another tropical storm much less a hurricane.

Well put it this way in 2004 (Frances,Jeanne), I was somewhat excited (but, at the same, time feeling guilty for being excited ). In 2005 (Wilma) I was just resolved to going through the whole routine again. In 2006 we had one we thought was coming and I just sat on the couch and brokedown because I didn't want it. Luckily, that was a false alarm. This year, I don't know. I'm hoping we don't get one for all the obvious reasons, but also insurance/real estate reasons. I think if we can go another year w/out a hurricane the home insurance might go down and people may want to start moving here again sparking a jump the the real estate market. So if we do get one this year, I think I'll be overall pretty depressed :( This isn't fun anymore..lol

I wouldn't call myself a wishcaster because no one in their right mind wants to see a particular area get destroyed. I do have a habit of being a fearmonger .,especially when a tropical storm developes near the Carribean

Tropical systems account for a lot of the rainfall in some regions during the summer and early fall. Frankly, a depression would be quite beneficial for southern Florida. Its all a part of life along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts...it can be a curse and a blessing. You need the moisture, but sometimes destruction comes along with it.

At no point would I refer to myself as a "wishcaster". I do take an interest in powerful tropical cyclones, but I'd appreciate it if they stayed far out in the Atlantic. That won't happen, of course. They do tend to move westward and poleward, but I can always dream.

When I was young (a teenager) yes, now no.
